The best passport holders

What to look for in a passport holder

The best passport holders will keep your passport and even other travel documents secure no matter where you travel. Before you buy one, though, you need to consider a few factors:

Set a budget.

With prices ranging from under $5 to nearly $100, you can find a passport sleeve that fits your budget.

What do you need it for?

Does it simply need to hold your passport? Or would you also like a holder that carries a vaccine card, other travel documents such as foreign currency, identification cards or credit cards?

Some passport wallets will also hold more than one passport, which is excellent for families with young children. You’ll also find many of the best passport holders now offer RFID technology to protect against digital identity theft.

"When shopping for a passport or ID case, it’s functional to have a clear window for visibility of the ID," recommends Samantha Brown, a New York-based celebrity stylist and author of Dressing Up: Pip’s Truly Fashionable Tale. "I’d also recommend a second pocket where you can tuck tickets or any paperwork you need to have readily accessible."

According to Angela Cavis, a director of communications, Americas at Booking.com, “I always look for something that combines form and function — it should protect your documents, of course, but also fit seamlessly into your carry-on or everyday bag."

For more seasoned travelers, Cavis suggests opting for materials that are water-resistant or wipeable to ensure your case stays “looking great” after every trip.

Does it match your style?

And then, of course, consider your aesthetic. Passport wallets come in various colors and materials; some offer a zip closure, while others take the form of a book cover for your passport.

"Leather, vegan leather and PVC are the most common materials for a passport or ID case," says Brown. "Woven and fabric ones will show wear over time and are less durable."

Christina Stein, a personal stylist and CEO of Life and Style by Christina, also calls leather her "go-to" for passport cases and ID holders as it looks good and lasts. "I also think nylon works pretty well, too!" she notes.

Frequently asked questions

“My best tip is a simple one: Always put your passport in the exact same place, both at home and when you travel,” says Luis Vargas, founder and CEO of Modern Adventure. “It can save the frantic panic of not knowing where it is when you need it most.”

Vargas added that we should put a reminder on our calendar for passport renewal; with ample time, it’s an easy process.

“If you need a valid passport in a matter of days, you can go to a Federal Passport Agency in a major city and walk out with one on the same day with the proper proof of travel and process,” says Vargas.

Another way to keep your passport and other travel documents safe is to make copies. Travel writer Jeremy Albelda recommends storing electronic copies of your documents on a secure cloud service or on your phone.

Simply put, no.

“Unfortunately, you cannot add your passport to your Apple Wallet, as it is a physical document and not currently supported by the app,” Albelda says. “However, you can add certain IDs, boarding passes and tickets to your Apple Wallet for easy access and convenience during travel.”

“When I travel, I put the local currency [that] I don’t want in my wallet in my passport instead,” Vargas says. “That way, I always know where it is and that it’s secure.”

Probably not, but they can be helpful.

“While a passport holder is not mandatory, it offers added protection by keeping your passport organized and safe from wear and tear,” says Albelda. “Passport holders with RFID-blocking technology also protect your personal information from being stolen.

”Remember that you will need to remove your passport from the holder when it’s being inspected.

Vargas adds, “I travel up to 200 days a year and do not use a passport holder.”
