Chef notes

Game night is best when served an apropos cocktail upon arrival. If you’re this weekend’s host, whip up a batch of the classic Boulevardier cocktail. This drink is a spin on another vintage sip: the Negroni. Where gin is the star in the well-balanced Negroni, whiskey takes its place in the glass for a Boulevardier.

The combination of a bitter like Campari, a sweet like vermouth and a bold sip like whiskey is perfect for curling up around a game board or when shuffling the deck. It’s rich and easy to drink with very few ingredients.

The classic garnish is an orange twist, but I like to use an orange wheel. Run the orange side of the skin around the rim of your glass, expressing the oils as you go for a perfect citrus-perfumed sip. There are no fussy ingredients or procedures, just three simple, well-crafted ingredients and you’ll be enjoying a winning cocktail in no time.

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces whiskey
  • 1 ounce Campari
  • 1 ounce Sweet Vermouth
  • 1 orange wheel or orange peel

Preparation

In a shaker or mixing glass with ice, add your whiskey, Campari and sweet vermouth.

Stir until well chilled. Either strain and serve up in a coupe or strain over one large ice cube in a rocks glass. Serve with an orange garnish.
