Chef notes

If you’re hooked on Apple TV+’s “Palm Royale” and can’t get enough of main character Maxine Simmons (Kristen Wiig), then you’ve probably also had her green drink of choice on your mind.

The Grasshopper is a classic cocktail typically reserved for after-dinner sipping, but the 1960s Palm-Beach-high-society wannabe carries them around well before the sun goes down.

First created in 1918 by a bar in New Orleans, it became popular enough to join the International Bartenders Association official list of cocktails. Lesser known today, it's an easy one to make with a recipe that calls for the three ingredients to be combined in equal parts.

Technique tip: You can also simply mix all ingredients together and chill in the refrigerator before serving rather than using a cocktail shaker.

Swap option: Over the years, there have been many iterations playing with the proportions of the three ingredients. While the equal parts recipe remains the traditional version, try playing with increasing the proportions of heavy cream for a smoother sip.

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces green crème de menthe
  • 2 ounces clear or white crème de cacao
  • 2 ounces cream
  • chocolate curls or shavings, mint leaves or freshly grated nutmeg, to garnish

Preparation

1.

Chill 2 martini glasses in the freezer for 20 minutes

2.

Fill a cocktail shaker half full with ice. Add crème de menthe, crème de cacao and cream. Shake vigorously.

3.

Strain into chilled martini glasses and garnish with chocolate curls or shavings for a classic topper, and with mint leaves or freshly grated nutmeg for a modern twist.
