Chef notes

I love building cocktails that people serve themselves. Having a pitcher of sangria at the dinner table on Thanksgiving is such a fun way to enjoy the holiday. It also something a little different from the traditional bottle of wine, but still features the familiar flavors. I think this is the best wine-based cocktail to serve with turkey.

Ingredients

Cinnamon Simple Syrup
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 4-5 cinnamon sticks
Sangria
  • 1 (750-milliliter) bottle red wine
  • 4 ounces bourbon
  • 3 ounces cinnamon simple syrup (recipe above)
  • 8 ounces club soda
  • raspberries, lemon, lime and orange slices, to garnish
  • cinnamon sticks, to serve

Preparation

For the cinnamon simple syrup:

In a small pot, add the water and bring to a boil, then add sugar and stir until it is completely dissolved. Turn down the heat until it is at a slight simmer and add the cinnamon sticks. Cover with a lid. After 5 minutes remove from heat and let steep for at least one hour.

For the sangria:

In a large pitcher, add the red wine, bourbon, cinnamon simple syrup and club soda. Garnish with citrus slices and raspberries.

Serve in a glass and garnish with a cinnamon stick.
