First comes the RSVP, then comes the dress. With spring in full bloom and wedding season fast approaching, guests are beginning to plan their travel, gifts and, of course, their outfits. Whether you’ve already found your look or want to elevate a piece you already own with new accessories, mastering a few key do’s and don’ts can help you find the right look — and land you on the best-dressed list.
According to fashion psychologist and styling consultant Jennifer Heinen, spring weddings represent a new chapter filled with positivity and joy. “To align with this feeling, opt for lighter, breathable fabrics such as chiffon, silk, linen or satin,” she says. “Soft silhouettes and romantic details such as floral prints, pastel colors and delicate patterns perfectly capture the essence of spring. Research shows that these fashion choices evoke emotional ease, comfort and openness.”
To help you shop the best dresses available this season, we polled our Shop TODAY editors for their favorite brands and styles — and even what they’re planning to wear when the invitations turn into celebrations. Plus, we asked fashion experts to give us their best tips for the season.
Expert and editor-approved wedding guest dresses
- Affordable
- Flattering
- Versatile
- Limited color range
This ankle-length dress (which is also available in standard sizing) is a great transitional weather option — light enough for warm weather, but still not totally skin-baring across the chest and shoulders. It'll suit a "cocktail attire" dress code at a restaurant venue or afternoon wedding.
I [Marrison] recommend this as an affordable option for those trying to stick to an under-$100 budget. For just $70, this dress delivers a drapey, "silky-smooth" look, according to the brand. Yet, it's still machine-washable.
- Range of sizes offered
- Many say it's flattering
- May be too long for some
"Lulus has such a wide array of dresses for all types of events and the collections only get better each year," says associate editor Kamari Stewart-Jackson. "I also love that they offer a decent amount of cute and trendy styles in plus sizes. I'm eyeing this one or one of the more floral numbers for a wedding I have on the calendar in a few months."
- Very flattering
- Affordable
- Made-to-order only
Editor Julie Ricevuto loves this dress, “which is super flattering and affordable, always an added benefit!” Another Shop TODAY editor also loves this brand for its affordable price point. With more than 60 colors to choose from, brides and guests alike can choose their pick for fall or spring weddings.
- Versatile
- Comfortable
- Try to catch it when on sale
Shop TODAY deputy managing editor Francesca Cocchi Zabloudil favors this dress from Hill House Home and owns it in multiple colors. "I always keep an eye out for when certain variations go on sale," she adds. "It’s perfect for welcome parties, rehearsal dinners and more casual summer weddings. It’s also incredibly flattering and comfortable. And as someone with a bigger bust, I appreciate that I can wear a regular bra with it.”

- It's lightweight
- Very flattering
- Not stretchy
According to Silver, embracing soft pastels, floral prints and brighter shades is always a solid choice this time of year. She also suggests going for a lightweight dress like this one. The halter neckline drapes naturally and is flattering on a variety of chest sizes. Plus, it has an elastic back for easy zipping.
- Multiple colors
- Versatile
- Takes time to deliver
“I own this dress in the Rosewood hue," says social video producer Anita Chomenko. "I originally got it as a bridesmaid’s dress but then loved it so much I wore it to another wedding the same year!” she added. While it takes a while for an order to arrive, Chomenko loves the size inclusivity and wide array of color offerings.
- Two-in-one
- Available in multiple colors
- Fairly priced
- Hang to dry
While pastels tend to be the preferable choice for spring wedding attire, Lizzy Polden, fashion stylist and founder of Agency Eight, says you can choose a darker shade if the wedding has a formal evening theme. Navy is a versatile, all-seasons option that doesn't feel as harsh as black.
I [Marrison] have been eyeing this Quince dress because it's a two-in-one: You can wear it with the scarf to get an elevated, classic look or keep it strapless for a more casual, minimalist approach. For summer, pair it with a heeled sandal. Then come winter, opt for a pointed toe sling back and tights.
If you favor bold prints and cuts, consider this editor-loved option. The open back is ideal for late spring and early summer.
Shop TODAY editor Kara Quill wore this to a wedding last summer and loved it. "I ended up buying it again with a slightly different back and different color for a different wedding," she added.
This Anthropologie dress is suitable for women of all ages, meaning it's a look you can turn to for weddings and formal occasions year after year. According to reviewers it runs large, so it's recommended to size down.
A friend of mine [Marrison] just bought this for a casual wedding in a beautiful rustic location and I love it on her! What's nice is that it's actually two layers: a sheer layer on top with an opaque slip underneath — they clip together to keep everything in place. I think it's a cute idea to take the top layer off for the reception and just wear the slip to dance in — any time I see a woman do that I think it's so chic and fun.
- Flattering
- Has thin straps
- Wear with a push-up bra
If you want to show off your shoulders with added support, this dress is for you. It features thin straps that are hardly noticeable and will offer comfort while on the dance floor. It also features a side panel made from a sheer material that will allow you to be flexible when walking from the ceremony to the reception venue.
- Flattering sleeve
- Unlined
These days, many mothers of the bride or groom struggle with knowing what to wear — often, dresses feel either too old or too young. I [Marrison] think this pleated option from Tuckernuck is a meet-in-the-middle pick that will stand the test of time in family photos. Since a lot of mature women prefer a longer sleeve, the sheer three-quarter length here is perfect. And the drop waist is on trend while somehow classic, too. Pair it with pointed toe heels and you'll be off to the races.
- Comfortable
- Versatile
- A bit of an investment
Cocchi Zabloudil also owns this Hill House dress (in the navy hue) and can attest to its versatility. You'll find yourself wearing it to wedding after wedding! The patterns are ideal for spring and summer, and have a Southern feel for those who favor that traditional vibe.
- Elegant silhouette
- Feels lightweight
- Dry clean only
Another Cocchi Zabloudil favorite! (Admittedly, she's attended countless weddings.) She gravitates toward this Reformation pick formal events. It's designed to be fitted and boasts thin straps that create the illusion of a strapless dress, without compromising support and security.
I [Marrison] am considering this Amanda Uprichard pick for a coastal 2026 wedding. I love the timeless appeal of boatneck, while the open back adds an unexpected, youthful element that will suit the warm weather.
This brand is popular for its wide size availability and print options. With a flattering silhouette and a flowy A-line skirt that drapes well, this is an elegant choice.
- Feels lightweight
- Super soft
- Needs to be steamed
Shop TODAY photo editor Kara Birbaum owns a similar version of this dress and says it's super comfortable. "I wore it for like 10 weddings last year," quips Birbaum. This new version features side ruching and an open back, with the same lightweight silk material.

Accessories for wedding guests
When it comes to accessorizing, it is important to consider the weather, venue and dress code. Heinen recommends thoughtful accessories for a spring wedding. "Delicate jewelry, like minimalist necklaces or floral-inspired earrings, complement your look and add refined personal charm without overpowering."
- Great for adornment
- Easy to pin
- Ideal to pin with ties
I [Espinal] own a few pins from this brand and I love how they elevate my overall hairstyle. They are small and easy to wear if you have a high ponytail, a braid or a more elevated bun.
- Gold, silver and mixed tones
- Bottom link is removable
- Hypoallergenic and lightweight
- Post may bend easily
Associate editor Audrey Ekman recently tested these convertible earrings and says they give her ears some reprieve. With an affordable price point and versatile design, they're a great complement for any wedding attire.
- Affordable
- Timeless
- Practical heel height
- Also available in wide sizing
If you need a practical heel, go for this affordable and not-too-high pair. They're a fraction of the price of similar options at other retailers, yet still look luxe.
- Versatile
- Neutral
- Not machine-washable
This straw clutch is 50% off, making it a smart buy for summertime or destination weddings. It'll add complimentary texture to your look! Pair it with a floral dress and you'll create a natural, seasonal vibe.
- Elegant
- Easy to clip
- Don't wet accessory
I [Espinal] recently received this gift from the brand and love how it complements my outfits. It features two chains with unique pearl details that look more unique than other pearl-inspired jewelry. I wear it with tops or strapless dresses, and it instantly upgrades my outfit.
- Real freshwater pearls
- Versatile
- Delicate
Speaking of pearls, these Quince earrings are a versatile option you won't regret buying. Wear them with a formal dress for the wedding you're attending, then use them to elevate an everyday look later. Pro tip: they make a great gift for the bride, too.
- Elegant
- Not heavy
- Higher price point
This is one of my favorite sets of earrings for its subtle elegance yet glamorous impact. It features a multi-colored and iridescent material called abalone that looks ultra luxurious.
Every woman needs a pair of nude heels in her wardrobe. These Sam Edelman ones will go with any look during any season.
- Very elegant
- Can be heavy
- Costly
Elevate your hoop game with these earrings from Ramy Brook. They are a modern take on the classic hoop with a gold-toned setting, and they are also hypoallergenic. They are my go-to whenever I want to make a statement.
What to wear to a spring wedding
With spring’s unpredictable weather, it’s wise to plan for layers, too. Kleinfeld Director of Merchandising Dorothy Silver recommends incorporating “a light cardigan, blazer or shawl in a complementary color to stay comfortable if there’s still a chill in the air.”
Of course, what’s appropriate to wear ultimately depends on the dress code, location and overall tone of the event. “Spring weddings often lean toward semi-formal or cocktail attire,” says Lizzy Polden, fashion stylist and founder of Agency Eight. For men, a light suit — such as linen, grey or navy — or dress pants paired with a button-down shirt work well. For women, “a knee-length or midi dress, or even a flattering jumpsuit, can be a great option,” she explains.
If you're not ready to commit to a purchase, consider renting. I [Espinal] and a few of our other editors like Nuuly, Rent the Runway, Bag Borrow or Steal and Elysewalker Borrow.
Spring wedding guest outfit trends
According to professional bridal stylist Alysia Cole, expect dresses that lean into ultra-feminine details such as floral prints, bows and 3-D rosettes. “We’re also seeing more textured dresses," she adds. Think: ruffles, pleated skirts, colorful jacquards and rosettes.
“Floral patterns are also a good choice," Silver explains. "Opt for lightweight fabrics like linen and chiffon for comfort during the spring season. Other spring styles may include wrap dresses, jumpsuits and two pieces."
“Finish the look with accessories such as a chic clutch, comfortable heels, and jewelry. Keep in mind that accessories can help you restyle a dress or separates so you can wear them to different weddings,” adds Silver.
Frequently asked questions
According to Cole, the best thing you can do is to follow the dress code. "This can get complicated with more couples choosing to create their own dress codes like “tropical cocktail” or “outshine the bride” but just do your best! If there are any requests to dress in or avoid certain colors, be sure to follow those. If no colors are specified on the invite, avoid wearing any white just in case."
Since you will be featured in the wedding photos and probably video, Silver suggests always setting the tone and respecting the code. "The exception is if the couple requests white/cream in the dress code. Additionally, keep it elevated and wearable. For example, avoid overly flashy or revealing outfits, casual attire like jeans, sweatshirts or sneakers, and uncomfortable shoes that make it hard to enjoy the event," adds Silver.
"Colors play a critical role in setting the emotional tone of any event, especially weddings. Soft pastels — like powder pink, icy blue and lilac — are calming, romantic and uplifting, which perfectly suits the atmosphere of a wedding," shares Heinen.
On the other hand, earth tones and botanical hues can deepen our connection to nature, says Heinen. "These hues enhance feelings of balance and tranquility. Brighter shades, such as classic reds or marigold, evoke warmth, energy and festive vibes, making them suitable for guests who wish to add an expressive touch."
A general rule of thumb is to complement the season and balance style with comfort, "ensuring you look elegant without overshadowing the couple," says Silver.
"Elegant statement earrings help elevate a wedding guest look and are great pieces you can continue to wear outside of wedding season. Playful clutches are also having a moment and a fun way to add a pop of color and personality to your look. Springtime weddings often have outdoor ceremonies, so making sure you can walk on grass or brick is key when choosing a shoe. A low block heel is always a safe bet, I also love a pointed toe flat for an elegant but still comfortable feel," shares Cole.
