There are numerous types of outerwear on the market, including wool coats, rain jackets, cardigans and more that keep us warm and stylish during the colder months. But, trench coats and peacoats tend to be the most reached for and have been sartorial standouts. However, there are some distinctions that make them differ and not just in their design.

"Peacoats are typically shorter and made for colder weather, unlike trench coats, which are made with water-resistant properties," says New York-based stylist, Liz Teich.

However, there are other key factors that differentiate the styles. From the materials to their button closures, design and even length, both outerwear categories are far from similar. "A trench is typically knee-length or longer, creating a sleek silhouette, whereas a peacoat is shorter and more structured," says style expert Julie Kraus.

As someone who owns over 30 coats, I am particularly biased toward trench coats, but peacoats also deserve stage presence. Since peacoats are made with a heavier wool fabric, they are more appropriate for colder days. At the same time, trench coats are ideal for in-between weather, especially when you're transitioning from winter to spring.

Read below to learn what the style experts have to say about both outerwear pieces and which one is right for your daily looks.

Trench coats vs. peacoats

The main differences between a trench coat and a peacoat lie in the material, design and care, according to celebrity stylist and author of “Style for Everybody,” Kim Appelt.

  • Material: “Trench coats are typically made from cotton gabardine or a water-resistant blend; peacoats are thick wool for warmth.”
  • Design: “Trench coats are longer with a belt, offering a cinched silhouette, while peacoats are cropped, boxier, and feature large buttons.”
  • Care: “Trench coats require more delicate cleaning due to their fabric, while peacoats can handle a little more wear and dry cleaning.”

What is a trench coat?

A traditional trench coat has epaulets, gun flaps on the front and a British-inspired style, according to Teich. "A trench coat is a lightweight, usually belted coat with a structured collar, originally designed for British Army officers in World War I. Made from water-resistant fabric like cotton gabardine, it’s the ultimate all-weather classic," adds Appelt.

Their effortless and sophisticated style offers a seamless transition from day to night. They come in different materials, but ideally, trench coats are made with waterproof or water-resistant materials. "They are lightweight, often water-resistant and designed for layering in transitional weather," shares Kraus.

What is a peacoat?

Typically, a peacoat has a double-breasted base and is reminiscent of a sailor's uniform since it was worn by Americans and Europeans in the Navy. "A peacoat is a shorter, wool coat with a structured, double-breasted design and wide lapels. Originally a naval staple, it’s made from thick wool for warmth and durability, making it ideal for colder months," says Kraus.

While most peacoats are double-breasted, there are some variations with zipper closures and longer hems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Trench coats are very versatile and pair well with many looks. "For a chic, everyday outfit, layer a classic beige trench over jeans, a relaxed T-shirt, and flats. For a more elevated look, drape it over a dress or a tailored suit with heels. Since trenches are lightweight, they’re perfect for transitional layering — can be belted for a modern look or worn open for an effortless feel," says Kraus.

However, it's not necessary to wear a belt when you don a trench coat, but you can tie it in different ways. "You can either do a square knot or a half bow when wearing a trench coat. The traditional rule is to either go one or two inches above a dress hem, or you can go longer otherwise," says Teich.

Since peacoats feature a more structured design, they can be paired effortlessly with many different pieces. Peacoats look great with "tailored trousers and a turtleneck for a sharp, put-together feel or casually with denim and sneakers for an easy weekend outfit," says Appelt.

They are also great for cool-weather styling. "They pair effortlessly with jeans, a turtleneck, and boots for a cozy look. For a more refined outfit, wear one over tailored trousers and loafers. Because of their shorter length, peacoats create a balanced silhouette that works especially well for petites, as they don’t overwhelm the frame," adds Kraus.
