The trench coat is one of the most versatile and basic staples to have in your wardrobe this fall. From sleeveless trenches to belted coats, there are many approaches to consider when it comes to wearing this essential piece of outerwear.
The military-inspired garment takes its name from the trenches during World War I when army officers and soldiers on the front line needed a durable, waterproof alternative to heavier wool coats.
The coat's original design had "a storm flap in the back of the coat as an extra protective layer from driving rain, epaulettes at the shoulders so officers could attach insignia denoting their rank and it was dyed in the color khaki so as to camouflage with their surroundings," mentions stylist Gloria Cospito.
Whether you're looking for a lightweight outerwear or something to pair with your outfits, trench coats are a lighter choice for mild to cold temperatures. Stylists share how to layer this timeless piece, plus a few options to add to your wardrobe.
What type of trench coats are trending for fall 2025?
On the trench coat front, the shorter silhouettes are rising in popularity. "While we like long traditional trench coats, short-waisted trench coats are a huge trend among the stylish girls [right now]. Though a trench usually feels like something that needs to be a long traditional transitional jacket, the short styles actually offer a more versatile approach to styling," shares stylist Sandra Okerulu.
"This season, I’m favoring the cropped trench coat. It’s a timeless piece with a modern twist that’s flattering on all body types and it’s an instant way to look chic without trying too hard," shares image consultant Lucia Gulbrasen.
When it comes to details, personal stylist Victoria Hathway says statement collars and necklines are making their debut. "Funnel necks, exaggerated collars and sculptural detailing are showing up across outerwear and trench coats are no exception. These elevated touches draw the eye upward and give the silhouette a fresh edge," she says.
Aside from the ubiquitous beige or black trench coat, "Another trending trend coat is colored leather trench coats. Nothing beats a good fall entrance when you are wearing a trench that has a pop of color or a fun print," adds Okerulu.
And don't be afraid to lengthen your silhouette with longer trench coats that [almost] hit the floor. Longer trench coats are "having a real moment right now. They pair beautifully with dresses, jeans or just about any outfit. This silhouette screams polished and sophistication and what makes it especially chic is the movement of fabric," adds Gulbrasen.
The best trench coats, according to experts
When shopping for trench coats from Amazon, fashion expert Lindsey Bernay recommends checking the fabrication and opting for a polyester blend instead. However, Gulbransen gives this style a thumbs up for its uncomplicated design. This length can be styled as a jacket while remaining true to the classic.
Cospito says yes to this denim style. "Cropped and in a light blue denim iteration, this take on the trench is fun, versatile and ready for fall, spring or summer," she says. This in particular offers a double-breasted silhouette that could replace your everyday blazer, with discreet side pockets to keep your essentials. It can pair well with a long dress, jeans and work pants. Fashion expert Lindsey Bernay also recommends H&M for its versatile designs and different options.
"Faux suede puts a fresh spin on the traditionally cotton twill or cotton blend trench," says Cospito. With a longer length and heavier weight, this coat is perfect for days you want a bit more warmth while keeping an elegant silhouette.
Cospito recommends this faux leather coat if you're looking for something more formal that adds elegance to your fit. "This leather-effect trench doesn’t mess around. Bring on the power plays in this Matrix-meets-the-runway option," she says.
"You can never go wrong with a leather trench that covers you for the outdoor elements while providing you with stylish versatility," shares Okerulu.
"The cropped cut gives this piece a lighter, more contemporary feel, while its clean, minimal design keeps it ageless and versatile. Its simplicity makes it easy to pair with a range of looks, from casual to more polished. The funnel neck is also a major trend we’re seeing for fall 2025, reflecting how classic wardrobe staples are being reinvented," says Hathaway. Gulbransen also recommends a similar trench coat with water-repellent qualities.
Gulbransen opts for this classic design from Steve Madden, which features deep pockets and a relaxed fit. This one has a storm flap that gives the classic look a modern approach. "Short-waisted trench coats work well for anyone who is petite and struggles to find the right trench for the season," shares Okerulu.
Gulbransen's top choice is this trench coat from Gap. It's a traditional design and pairs well with most ensembles. "I’ve had the GAP icon for over years and love it! It’s a classic for me," shares editorial director Adrianna Brach.
You can never go wrong with the classic designs and the minimalist approach of Uniqlo. "This piece preserves iconic trench details while modernizing them with a relaxed, oversized cut. The coat’s reversible fastening provides a subtle gender-inclusive touch, while rolling up the sleeves reveals the patterned lining, adding a playful detail. I particularly love the khaki, with its subtle earthy-gray undertone," says Hathaway.
Hathaway says, "This coat’s classic length and design make it easy to layer while the straight silhouette combined with a wrap style and belt, gives you the choice to wear it more fitted or relaxed. The black color option also feels like a fresh twist on the traditional beige, adding a sharper edge to a timeless staple."
Hathaway recommends this faux leather because it adds a sleek and slightly edgy vibe to any outfit. "The material’s rich texture, color and structure give the coat a refined touch while also offering some resistance to the outdoor elements. Its sister faux leather coat is also selling at a really amazing price at Bloomingdale's," she adds.
Hathaway and Okerulu recommend faux leather for its smooth-textured feel. I have this coat on my wish list since it combines the cozy color of fall with the warm elements of leather. A fun detail present on the neckline is the belted closure that adds sophistication.
One of my favorite outerwear pieces is a black faux-leather trench coat I [Espinal] have in my closet. Whether you’re wearing a casual or semi-formal look, this one can zhuzh up any style. It’s designed with a soft belt, front buttons and a lengthy cut to elongate your silhouette. If you can afford only one piece, I would opt for a black/beige trench coat that can be styled with multiple outfits. While this one is in the higher end, the color and fabric mix lend a luxurious feel to the entire piece.
“It’s the most important piece to build up a look, especially if is made from a special fabric,” says Bernay. "Trench coats in leather and suede add depth and dimension, making the classic style feel more distinctive," shares Hathaway.
What is a trench coat?
According to Bibeau, a trench coat typically has “a belted waist, [a] double-breasted front and epaulets.” She says, “They are often longer, extending to the knee or below.”
While the classic trench coat style has evolved throughout the years, Cospito notes that brands are revisiting its origins this season. “Designers are taking the bones of the classic trench and injecting a contemporary feel into this evergreen style. Whether it’s reimagining the coat in different materials, colors or shapes, the trench coat DNA is still there and as relevant as ever,” she adds.
How to style a trench coat
There are many variations of the trench coat, plus numerous ways to style it. Before adding this piece of outerwear to your ensemble, though, Cospito suggests finding a trench that complements the hues of your layers. "Choosing a trench in a neutral shade will help it work with most of the items in your closet."
Next, both Cospito and Gulbransen recommend finding the right fit that’ll look flattering on your body. “You don’t want a trench coat too oversized with layers because it will add unflattering bulk. Also, you don’t want your trench to be too fitted, as you want to be able to move with comfort and ease,” adds Gulbransen.

You can also use the trench coat as a statement piece. “Start with the same color top and bottom and throw on a different color trench to make your coat the standout piece,” says Gulbransen. Tip: make sure the clothes underneath your outerwear piece are fitted.
“For a tied-together look, I like styling a trench coat over a dress or skirt and top, paired with pumps and a feminine top-handle bag,” adds Gulbransen.
Finally, consider the number of layers you will need to wear during winter before deciding on your desired size. “You want a fit that allows for layering sweaters or other cold weather tops underneath,” shares Cospito.
