Depending on your hair and scalp type, you may not actually need to wash your hair every day.

Many hairstylists agree that spacing out washes can be beneficial for your locks — lathering up too often may cause an imbalance in your natural oils, make color-treated hair fade and even lead to scalp irritation. Plus, skipping the step for a day (or, if you're like some of us, three or four) can be a huge timesaver.

That being said, no matter how long you leave between washes, there usually comes a point when your hair needs a refresh. That's when dry shampoo comes in handy.

Whether you want to stretch a blowout for a few more days, get rid of grease or quickly spruce up after a sweaty workout, there are plenty of formulas that deliver. From stylist-loved sprays to aerosol-free options, below are the best dry shampoos that you (and your hair) will love.

What to look for in a dry shampoo

"The right [dry shampoo] can help refresh and revive your hair between washes, while the wrong one can leave your hair feeling heavy, dull or even damaged," says Miranda Furtado, an elite Bellami Pro Educator and owner of Love’s In The Hair, an extension studio based in Toronto.

With so many options on the market, it can be difficult to figure out which one is the right or wrong dry shampoo for you — or even where to begin your search. That's why we asked Furtado to share five factors to consider when you're shopping for the dry shampoo.

  • Type: Dry shampoos come in a variety of different types, including spray, powder, foam and paste formulas. The decision to use one over the other is generally based on personal preference and your hair's specific needs. For example, sprays tend to be quicker and easier to apply, while powders tend to be more absorbent, explains Furtado.
  • Ingredients: Pay attention to the ingredients in the dry shampoo. "Choose one that is free of sulfates, parabens and artificial colors, if possible. Some people may also be sensitive to fragrances or alcohol in the product," shares Furtado. If you begin to notice any scalp sensitivity or issues, such as dandruff or itching, check the ingredients list to see if it might be contributing to your discomfort. The fix may be as easy as swapping to another dry shampoo.
  • Price: "Dry shampoos can vary widely in price, from drugstore options to luxury products. Consider your budget and what is readily available to you," says Furtado. You might even find that having a budget-friendly option on hand for everyday use and saving the pricier product for special occasions can be the way to go.
  • Smell: "Many dry shampoos contain fragrances to refresh the hair and mask unpleasant odors," says Furtado. If you are sensitive to fragrances, you might opt for a fragrance-free option when available or steer clear of the spray formulas, as they tend to have a stronger scent.
  • Hair type: "Dry shampoos are formulated for different hair types, such as fine, medium or thick hair, and different textures, such as straight, wavy or curly hair," says Furtado. For example, many find that powder or lightweight spray options are best for thin hair, whereas those with curly hair may prefer a foam formula that can more easily be worked into the roots without affecting the structure of the curls. In most cases, the product will specify which hair type it will work best for.
