The appeal of a high heel is the look and height, but never the comfort. As I've entered my mid-20s, my feet gravitate towards a sneaker or flat rather than a high platform. But that doesn't mean that I don't indulge in a heel every now and then.

However, for the days when I want a little bit of both, a kitten heel is what I lean towards. They're "the sweet spot between comfort and style," says stylist Stephanie Escobar. "Unlike taller stilettos, they give you a slight lift without the foot pain, making them ideal for long days or nights out."

And as of late, it seems that current fashion trends are searching for comfort, too. According to Google Trends, 'kitten heels' has seen some of its highest search peaks over the past 90 days. The term was searched over 90,000 times just the last week alone.

"They’re easy to walk in, but still look polished and feminine, which is why they’ve become a go-to for both everyday outfits and dressier moments," Escobar adds.

Are kitten heels better for your feet?

It’s no secret that wearing high heels can negatively impact our feet, including adding pressure, causing bunions and other concerns. Kitten heels, with a general height of 1.5 to 2 inches in height, can promote “a more natural foot position compared to higher heels,” mentions Dr. Suzanne Fuchs, a board-certified podiatrist (high heels are approximately 3 to 4 inches on average, per Clarks). “They can significantly reduce the risk of foot problems associated with elevated styles." Thus, making them a better alternative for your foot health compared to high heels.

For instance, the significantly lower height in kitten heels evenly distributes pressure in your feet. High heels, on the other hand, can cause strain to the balls of the feet and toes if worn for long periods. The lower height can also minimize the risk of losing balance on uneven surfaces or falls, since they're easier to walk in, according to research. This makes kitten heels ideal for those new to heels, or even those who are healing from or currently have a foot injury, such as plantar fasciitis and bunions (which tight shoes, like high heels, can cause, per our previous coverage).

Although a sneaker or flat is better for your overall foot health, a kitten heel can be a stylish and comfortable alternative to stilettos.

How to style kitten heels

"Fashion right now is all about effortlessness with impact — and kitten heels deliver just that," explains Escobar. "They’re chic, comfortable and versatile, which checks all the boxes for today’s modern wardrobe."

Both of our stylists agree that kitten heels are a heel that practically go with everything. They're not too dressy, but they're also not too casual. Thus, Esocobar recommends styling kitten heels with everything: "Jeans and a tee, a midi skirt and button-down or even a suit if you want to dress things up without going full pump," she says.

In fact, Teich adds that one of the biggest challenges from her clients is how to style and dress up denim, but kitten heels are highly versatile for all types of bottoms this summer. "I love pairing them with straight leg, barrel, flare and even loose/wide leg jeans, which often look best with a little heel, so they make your legs look longer and don’t feel so heavy." she mentions. "A kitten heel is one of my go-to choices for dresses for warm weather — especially as a New Yorker, where we tend to walk a lot."

Frequently Asked Questions

High heels can sometimes be uncomfortable for those with flat feet. But "kitten heels with arch support can be beneficial for flat feet, especially those that feature cushioned insoles or footbeds designed to provide stability and comfort," explains Fuchs, among other benefits.

No matter if you're shopping for a kitten or high heel, Fuchs emphasizes that it is best "to size up in heels to ensure a comfortable fit." Sizing up "allows for natural foot expansion and can prevent discomfort or pain associated with a tighter fit," she adds.
