Warm materials can make a difference during brutal winter months, making fleece is a great option and insulator to keep you warm, cozy and protected when the temperatures go low. Experts love it, too; they say it's a great layering material for retaining body heat.
Unlike its big brother the heavy coat, fleece jackets are more lightweight in structure and provide a warm alternative while running, heading for an outdoor adventure or simply staying cozy in the office, without the extra sweat.
I [Espinal] opt for jackets with fuzzy textures and fitted silhouettes, especially when I want to keep extra insulated. However, certain fabric compositions will leverage that insulation factor more than others.
So, whether you're heading for après-ski, a holiday party or the mountains, experts reveal how to choose the right fleece jacket and what components to look out for. Our editors also share their top picks and which ones have surpassed wintery conditions.

Which is the warmest fleece?
According to textile expert and president of Filium Doug Lynch, the warmest fleece depends on its weight, fabric type and construction.
"Heavyweight fleece is generally considered the best for warmth. Consumers should aim for a minimum weight of 300 GSM when choosing fleece, as this provides optimal warmth," shares Lynch.
In textile jargon, GSM stands for (grams per square meter) the metric measurement of the weight of a fabric. Also, if you want maximum insulation, founder of CrashGal Couture Leah Wise recommends choosing fleece jackets labeled as Polartec or Thermal Pro, as these are considered heavyweight fleece.

Frequently asked questions
According to Lynch, fleece jackets are considered a mid-layer because it's "meant to provide insulation and retain body heat. Fleece excels here due to its lightweight, breathable, and insulating properties. It traps air to keep you warm while allowing moisture from the base layer to escape."
Also, you want to consider the fit of your jacket. Wise says to consider how you plan to wear your fleece during cold weather. "A slimmer fit is better for layering versus a looser cut for the outer most layer."
"Choosing a good fleece jacket depends on your intended use, climate and personal preferences," says Lynch. Below there's a guide to help you decide which one to buy:
- For casual wear: Lynch suggests, "prioritizing comfort and style; look for softer, lightweight fleece (100 GSM+)."
- For outdoor activities: "Choose fleece (200GSM+) based on your insulation needs, breathability, and layering compatibility," says Lynch.
- For cold weather: "Opt for heavyweight or windproof fleece for added warmth (300 GSM+)."
- For high-intensity activities: Lynch recommends opting for lightweight or breathable fleece to prevent overheating (100-200 GSM).
There are many ways to style a fleece jacket, according to Wise. "Keep it cozy and casual by pairing your fleece with a pair of joggers or sweats and UGGs. Or you can go for a more athleisure look with leggings, sneakers and a baseball cap."
If you want a more bold and retro style, Wise suggests "picking a fun color or patterned fleece and pairing it with wide leg jeans or trousers."
For a more dressed-up version, Lynch recommends opting for Chelsea boots and tailored chinos or dark wash jeans.
