One problem that is pretty universal for ruining a great hair day is frizz or flyaways. One second, you have perfect silky hair and the next minute, it has turned into a bushy poof. Whether it's humid, it's raining or you are just used to having frizzy hair, the good news is that there are a ton of products out there that aim to tame that frizz.
While many people think frizzy hair is just a concern for the summer, many people still experience frizzy hair in the winter or spring because of cold air outdoors and dry heat indoors. Google searches for 'how to fix frizzy hair' have grown by over 350% in the last month alone.
We chatted with some hair industry experts about how they tackle frizz and what ingredients they recommend for your hair type to fight frizz. Read on to see what they had to say about finding the right frizz product for your hair.
Expert-approved frizzy hair sprays
Protect blowouts and curls alike with this humidity spray that keeps down frizz.
“This spray is definitely my go-to anti-frizz product because it controls the hair while maintaining softness and movement. I prefer to brush the product through while the hair is still wet, which helps give it perfect definition,” says Claudio Belizario, a New York City-based stylist.
For an immediate frizz fix, New York City-based hair stylist Davey Matthew recommends reaching for something that’s a little bit heavier of a product that will seal your hair down and prevent it from growing — something like this Shop TODAY editor-favorite product, the Color Wow Dream Coat.
Matthew also recommends this hair primer from Bumble and bumble. “[It’s] a really nice one. It’s going to detangle. It’s going to give you a lot of moisture. It gives you heat protection up to 450 degrees.”
“Frizz and shine products can be greasy and have a tendency to weigh hair down, but that doesn’t apply to this lightweight spray,” says Salvatore Malafronte, a Boston-based stylist at Salon Mario Russo. “It prevents static, flyaways and frizz while creating soft texture and adding shine to all hair types and styles. Just be sure to hold the can a good 12 inches away from dry or damp hair so it distributes evenly.”
This hydrating spray is also a favorite of hairstylist and salon owner Jennifer Korab. “It has heat protectant, UV protectant and anti-frizz properties as well,” she says. It also works to detangle your hair while also hydrating it.
The brand says it can provide up to 72 hours of frizz protection. “I discovered this while looking for something lightweight to prevent frizz around the hairline and crown. I love it because it’s strong enough to last through a humid Florida night out and allows me to create volume without oily aftereffects,” says Jahzel Montana, a Miami-based hairstylist at the Sean Donaldson Salon.
Expert-approved frizzy hair shampoos and creams
For under $10, you can achieve silky hair with this shampoo from Dove. It nourishes your hair with natural oils and helps reduce frizz.
“This pairing works to eliminate frizz while nourishing hair with a blend of coconut, Argan oil and almond oils,” says Kylee Heath, a Los Angeles-based stylist. “I recommend both the shampoo and conditioner to my clients because they’re affordable and non-greasy. They won’t weigh hair down despite being super moisturizing.”
Celebrity hairstylist Kathleen Riley says a good foundation “starts with your shampoo and conditioner.” And while she’s a big fan of Nexxus’s entire Amino Bonds line, this shampoo is especially good at supporting hair health and keeping its moisture and strength intact.
Korab recommends that you use a hair mask one or two times a week. It is designed to impart hydration and prevent frizzy strands of hair.
This Alterna cream is a 10-in-1 product that has tons of hair benefits including shine, softness and more. New York City-based hairstylist Juan Carlos Maciques also loves this product for taming frizz.
“Fixing frizz requires hydration, and this product delivers just that. It works to replenish moisture and contains restorative ingredients like vitamin C to fight environmental aggressors,” Maciques says. “As an added bonus, this cream offers heat protection so you can blow-dry to your heart’s content.”
Expert-approved hair serums for frizz
Bring your hair back to life with this serum that transforms your hair into silky locks. “It’s absolutely amazing. I’m obsessed with it,” says Riley.
Editor-loved anti-frizz products
Associate editor Shannon Garlin says she’s been using this straightening and smoothing gel for over a decade. “My hairstylist turned me on to it and uses it on me when she blows out my hair during appointments,” she says. “Not only does it smell divine, but it also makes my wavy and frizzy hair ultra smooth; it allows me (along with my Dyson) to recreate a salon-worthy blowout.”
Shop TODAY associate editor Kamari Stewart-Jackson loves this taming wand from Rizos Curls. She says, "My hair still feels soft to the touch after application, and I can confidently use it for several days in a row before I need to wash my hair."

I [Shigo] love this cream for after the shower because it makes my hair so smooth. I have naturally super curly hair and this tames my flyaways and baby hairs. It also smells so good, I have been asked what perfume I am wearing before.
“This styling cream from Dae went viral on TikTok, and I get the hype,” says production associate Audrey Ekman. “I love a beauty multitasker, and this does the trick for me as both a sleek, shine-adding blow-dry cream and as a styling cream to slick back my hair or tame flyaways and frizz. Plus, it smells great — sweet and fruity!” She also adds that the brand says it can also add definition to curls or waves if that’s your hair type.
Riley also recommends a cream-based product like this one, especially on humid days when a blow-dry is out of the question.
Writer Danielle Murphy recommends this spray. “This makes my hair feel smooth for days and will likely be a huge help in the coming summer days that are likely to have frizz-causing humidity.”Her tip is to dispense it into your hair before putting it on your hair.
This new 2026 launch from Necessaire is a new favorite of deputy managing editor Jess Bender. She says, "Unlike other leave-in masks I've tried, this one doesn't add weight or heft to my hair while it's working its magic. Instead, it's lightweight but strong-acting against lingering wear and tear from the week, and the results have been lasting me for several days after use (even after my first shampoo post-masking!)."
Shop TODAY Award-winning products for anti-frizz
Want smooth locks? Try this serum that associate editor Shannon Garlin loves. She says, "I’ve used it for years and it helps tame my frizz." She also notes that a little goes a long way, as she has used the same bottle for around six years.
This editor-favorite won a 2024 Beauty Award for best budget hair serum. These keratin hair capsules work to transform frizzy hair into smooth, silky strands — without leaving it feeling greasy!
Every curly girl knows that a hairbrush is essential to a curly routine. This brush detangles while also enhancing your curl pattern.
Shop TODAY editorial director, Adrianna Brach, says, "This is super gentle ... one of our testers even used it on her kids’ hair and it was super easy to pull and didn’t make their hair frizzy at all."
This 3-in-1 dry shampoo gets rid of oily hair while also smoothing down frizz. And you won't have to worry about white residue when you use this. Ekman uses this and says, "I personally swear by this on day two (or three... or four...) hair, because it doesn’t give that starchy, crispy feeling other dry shampoos can. Plus, it smells amazing and really helps to tame my wild ends."

Producer Jillian Gonzales used this leave-in conditioner on her curly hair and loved how much it tamed her frizz. This leave-in treatment is great for detangling and hydrating your curls, leaving them smooth.

This shampoo from Nexxus won a Shop TODAY 2023 Beauty Award for Best Shampoo: Frizz-Prone Hair. Liz Calvario, reporter and editor for TODAY.com, loved that she “instantly saw the difference in how [her hair] felt after the first use.”
This mask adds moisture to your hair while also strengthening it. You can use it once a week and leave it on for about three to five minutes.
Bender tried this for Shop TODAY Hair Awards and says, "Outside of professional salon visits, I don’t think my hair’s been this soft or bouncy or frizz-free in a long, long time ... One colleague also commented that my tresses had gotten ‘so long’ during the time frame I’ve been using it, which may be a fluke but I’ll take hair compliments any day!”
I [Shigo] have been using this hair cream for over two years now and it is my favorite part of my hair routine. All in all, this curl cream defied my expectations and earned a spot in my [hair] routine. The added shine from the coconut oil helps keep my frizz at bay even on days when it is a little warmer.

This serum is a former Shop TODAY Beauty Award winner and is great for locking in your hairstyle and maintaining frizz. “A makeup artist introduced me to this product when we were working together on set. It’s extremely lightweight and I love that you only need a small amount to get the job done,” says David Cruz, a New York City-based celebrity stylist. “I prefer to use it on dry hair, once the style is set, which keeps the frizz to a minimum and maintains the look throughout the course of the day.”
Ekman swears by this mist and says “really works to de-frizz, strengthen and moisturize.” She adds, “My dye-damaged hair feels so soft and silky after I use this, whether I air dry or heat style it, and I love that it lives up to the name — the spray comes out in a fine, continuous mist and leaves my hair looking expensive.”
If you love to wear your natural hair but suffer from frizz, this is the best product for you. “It’s almost worse to try and fight it!” So she likes using this wave spray from Ouai, which Riley says “keeps the frizz out but enhances the natural style.”
How to fix frizzy hair?
“The way I like to think of it is that if your hair starts to frizz and grow in humidity, it’s almost as if your hair is reaching out into the environment to try to absorb some of that moisture,” says Matthew. He goes on to say that there are two ways to tackle that.
- Treat the symptom: Matthew suggests using frizz-fighting sprays to seal hair down for a quick moisture fix. “I think a lot of times people reach for oils when they think of moisture. I think that’s been kind of a trend over the last few years, but it’s not always necessarily an oil that’s going to treat the cause, because a lot of times [with] those oils, the molecules are too big to actually be absorbed into the hair and they’re just sitting on top of the hair,” he says.
- Treat the cause: For something that can actually be absorbed into the hair, Matthew recommends reaching for something that’s really creamy, “like a humectant or a plant-based moisturizer ... It might take a little longer, but overall, you’re going to get the most benefit from that,” he promises.
Frequently Asked Questions
French hair and extension specialist and the owner of Adel Atelier salon in New York City, Abel Chabbi, recommends using heat protectant primers and oils that make the hair "a bit heavier and more frizz-resistant."
Korab also recommends finding the right oils, serums and heat protectants to combat frizz, however, she also adds, "One of the most important things to remove frizz is to keep [hair] hydrated."
According to Chabbi, humid weather typically means your hair can handle more products. But she emphasizes how important it is to let the hair fully dry after application before entering a humid environment. When you let the hair fully dry, it allows the hair follicle to seal, which will, in turn, lock out any moisture that could lead to frizz.
Chabbi says the best solution is actually a travel-sized oil. This way, you can retouch the exact area in need of some love.
Using an oil before shampooing can protect the hair from dryness, Chabbi says. “That way, when shampoo is rinsed [out], the oils protect the ends and the hair looks healthier and less frizzy.”
Water temperature would definitely make a little bit of a difference. Using cooler water will close the cuticle of your hair, it will always reduce frizz. You definitely want to use a shampoo that's sulfate-free, because that will avoid stripping [your hair] of natural oils.
Matthew says that over exposing your hair to heat and not using a heat protectant can be a big mistake that contributes to frizzy hair. However, his biggest piece of advice is to take a hard look at the products you're using that promise "heat protection."
"Almost every product is going to give us some level of heat protection, because essentially the product we're putting on our hair is going to take heat before the hair does. But really making sure we're looking for products that are labeled as a heat protectant and not just [giving] heat protection [is important], because there's a lot of testing and clinicals that go into heat protectants so that they can use that label," he says.
Products will sneak in "and it gives you heat protection!" — well, yeah, anything will give you heat protection because we're putting that layer of product onto our hair. So, really making sure we're looking for specifics and not necessarily marketing lingo.
Matthew says your best bet is to find a formula that is very moisture-rich, but just clarifying. In fact, there's a pretty easy way to tell which is which.
"Visually, just looking at a shampoo, you can [get] an idea if it's going to be moisture-driven or more clarifying. If we look at a shampoo that is clear, or light passes through it pretty easily, that's going to be, nine times out of 10, a shampoo that we're going to receive a lot more clarifying from. Where if we're looking at a shampoo with a milkier consistency, that's going to be moisture-driven. Now, for conditioner, I think it becomes a little more tricky because most conditioners are mostly milkier or have a lower viscosity as well. A broad idea, the lower the viscosity, the more moisture you're going to have," he says.
"Hairspray can have a tendency to be more drying, because most of them do contain alcohol," says Korab. Especially for someone with naturally curly hair or really frizz-prone hair, I would probably avoid hairspray. But if you do need to use [one], I would go on the lighter side [as in hold]. Stay away from hairsprays with harsh hold."
