Tribute to James Gandolfini planned in Italy

The actor was in Rome with his 13-year-old son, planning to attend a film festival in Sicily, when he suddenly died Wednesday. The film festival now has a special tribute planned for Saturday to honor the actor. NBC’s Michelle Kosinski reports.

>> hey matt. i just spoke to a close friend that knew of no drug or alcohol problems in the actor's recent past and he seemed to be doing well. he couldn't tell us that gandolfini lead a healthy life style . he died shortly after being dinner with his son.

>> reporter: james gandolfini 's sister arrives to where italian doctors are completing an autopsy today investigating his sudden death . gandolfini spent his last day enjoying the roman sunshine and food with his family. at 10:00 p.m . wednesday his 13-year-old son michael called reception saying he had found his dad collapsed in the bathroom. hotel staff say he was still breathing when they went upstairs to help. they performed cpr until paramedics arrived. there doctors worked for 40 minutes massaging his heart but the man that made tony soprano a household name was pronounced dead on arrival . the victim of an apparent heart attack at age 51.

>> he was doing really well. we just spoke the other day and she was jovial and we were trying to see if we could link up. i was already in europe and then this happened but he was doing extremely well.

>> in sicily at the star studded film festival gandolfini was set to attend, people are still stunned. now there will be a tribute to the actor on saturday. just as the sopranos ended so suddenly, gandolfini 's passing leaves his world of fans wishing for more. we may yet see gandolfini on the big or small screen. just before he passed away he finished shooting two movies and an hbo pilot, matt.
