More than 4,700 Philadelphia transit workers walked off the job at midnight after they could not reach a contract agreement, bringing subway, bus and trolley service to a halt. With Election Day just one week away, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority may seek an injunction to force striking workers back on the job if there is no resolution by next Tuesday.
