Stuck on What to Wear to Work? Experts Share the Best Office Pants to Get the Job Done

Our editors share the tried-and-true pairs they wear 9-to-5 and after hours.

Office attire can sometimes feel too uniform-looking or, on the other end of the spectrum, lack a little pizzazz. With an almost full return-to-office schedule, our editors found themselves looking to improve their work wardrobes and find alternatives that look professional yet chic, whether they’re heading to events, conference meetings or after-work appointments.

Finding the right pants for a professional environment can be challenging. Some offer minimal stretch, while others lack the structure and refinement of a classic office pant. “A few perfect pairs of pants will serve you far better than a closet full of almost-right ones. Invest in quality, tailor them to your body and choose pieces versatile enough to earn their place in your wardrobe,” says wardrobe consultant and founder of Watson Style Group, Maegan Watson.

While we like to keep up with the trends, they’re not for everyone, and not all pants work for every season. “A great work pant shouldn’t only work at work. If you’ve invested in the right trouser, it should become one of the hardest-working pieces in your wardrobe,” shares Watson.

To help you decide on your next purchase, we asked our stylists to share their tips on finding the right length, recognizing the right fabric and choosing pants that can serve you well in the conference room and beyond. Our editors also share the most-trusted pairs that help them get their job done.

The versatility is endless it easily pairs well with a blazer, a trending motto jacket or even denim,” she says. This pair offers an array of colors, lengths and waist sizes to accommodate your height and fit.

Best office pants according to editors

Halara Flex™ High Waisted Pocket Wide Leg Waffle Work Pants

Editorial operations manager Jillian Ortiz has been wearing these on repeat. “I’m always on the lookout for pants that look polished but don’t feel restrictive, and these fit the bill. I was a bit nervous about the waffle weave because it’s more noticeable in person, but they still look great. I can wear them to the office or on the weekend since they’re so easy to dress up or down. It feels like wearing sweatpants, honestly,” she raves.

Halara High-Waisted Work Pants

Editor Shannon Garlin previously rated these pants the “most comfortable” pair yet. “It was love at first ... wear. These pants are so comfortable that it doesn’t feel like you’re wearing tailored pants. In fact, it feels like you’re wearing your most comfortable pajama bottoms. The fabric feels like butter against your skin, and they’re extremely stretchy,” she mentioned previously in this review.

Senior partnerships editor, Francesca Cochi Zabloudil joined in the pants testing and has the same sentiment. “I’ve worn these pants to the office multiple times and to after-work events, so they’re comfortable for many hours of wear,” she mentions.

Aritzia The Effortless Pant - Crepette

Writer Emma Stessman recently tested these pants from Aritzia along with other editors, calling them “low-maintenance” and earning “countless compliments on.”

“Each Effortless Pant features knife pleats along the front, which drapes down the front and not only adds a fun, stylish touch, but as a petite woman, I feel like it elongates my legs and makes me look taller,” she says. If you’re busy with your corporate life, these pants will make things more efficient as they require minimal care. “I throw them in the dryer on full heat every time and have not noticed any signs of wear and tear from it,” adds Stessman.

Eileen Fisher Lightweight Satin Shimmer Fulll-Length Wide Pant

Associate market editor Audrey Ekman has been wearing these pants for months for their breathable construction. She says these pants look “like pajamas but look professional enough for work.” The silk-like construction offer a relaxed fit and works great for the petite ladies. “I especially love them for summer, since they’re lightweight and breathable enough to handle my hour-long commute to and from the office on NYC’s notoriously stuffy subways,” adds Ekman.

I [Espinal] wear these pants weekly for work for their easy pull-on design and comfortable feel. They’re super flattering and match with most of my tops, blouses and T-shirts. With a tailored fit and wide leg opening, these pants are ideal for the office, weekend and even travel. The design sits right on my waistline without constricting my belly or suffocating me after hours of wearing them. They’re easy to pull on and feature a moisture-wicking fabric that controls sweaty situations. I have added these into my weekly rotation for an easy professional look that feels elevated yet chic.

Ann Taylor Weekend Patch Pocket Pant

Associate producer Alexa Arent says, “These have become my go-to work pants. I love how versatile they are. I dress them up some days with heels but can also rock a cute sneaker with them on comfortable days. They are also super comfortable and have a cute vintage look that makes them fun to pair with different shirts.” The tailored fit make them ideal for a work environment that requires a more polished attire. Plus, the fabric is suitable for all seasons.

BCBG Women's High-Rise Wide-Leg Stripe Pants

I [Espinal] have been eyeing a pair of striped pants for the fall season, and these are a winner. The straight leg, adjustable belt and side pockets accentuate the figure while giving your legs an elongated look. Once I get them, I plan to wear these pants with vests, button-down shirts and tank tops (blazer included). They feature a hook-and-bar closure for a seamless design that enhances your waist without bulging, while looking clean and professional.

Miraclesuit Mirasculpt Slim Pant

These are my go-to pants for days I [Espinal] need to feel put-together and hide extra pounds. Thanks to the tummy-control and slimming technology, these pants conceal extra weight (especially when I’m bloated. Aside from their tummy-control feature, the pants feature smooth fabric and flexible construction that fits comfortably, without constricting your waist. It’s a pair that is easily elevated with heels or dressed down with sneakers.

Office pants trending in 2026

If you can’t escape the trend cycle, Okerulu says “ankle barrel pants create a sculpture fashion-forward silhouette. This is a really fun pant style that feels like the 80s women’s office wear. The high-waisted silhouette, and front pleats design add draping and volume, which create an elongated line on the leg,” says Okerulu.

“Right now, I’m loving a full-length, wide-leg, mid-rise trouser. It feels current, but it’s also incredibly flattering and versatile, which means it has staying power beyond a single season,” adds Watson. She recommends having them hemmed for a medium-to-low heel. “That gives you enough flexibility to wear the same pant with a flat or loafer during the day and still put on a heel when you want to dress it up,” she explains.

Ripley Rader Black Ponte Knit Standard Wide Leg Pant

Editor Vivien Moon says these pants are flattering, comfortable and easy to put on. These are similar to a luxury recommendation from Watson, which smooths and sculpts your figure. “If you’re looking for flattering and comfortable office pants that you can wear comfortably any time of the month, this might be the pair! Without a traditional button zipper closure, these are the pull-on pants of my dreams and it’s one that I can pair with so many blouses and tops to take it from the office to a restaurant on the weekend if I wanted to. I love that they are lightweight but not cheap-feeling; they’re clearly well-made and will last a while. I will note to check your size and length since there are more options available there,” Moon recommends.

Frequently asked questions

According to Watson, the right pant length depends on both "your proportions and how you plan to style the pants."

"If you carry more of your height in your legs, you can get away with a shorter hem. If you carry more of your height in your torso, a full-length pant can be incredibly flattering because it helps elongate the leg and balance your proportions," explains Watson.

Also, you want to consider the shoes and tops you're pairing the pants. "Pant length should be considered as part of the whole look, rather than in isolation," she says.

"And don't underestimate tailoring. A beautiful pair of trousers becomes your perfect pair of trousers when the proportions and hem are tailored specifically to you," she adds.

"Wool gabardine and crepe are two of my favorites for year-round work pants. Both have enough structure to look polished and transition beautifully between seasons," shares Watson.

While lower-cost options are tempting, Watson recommends investing in a good pair that will fit beautifully every day. "A beautifully constructed trouser in a great fabric will hold its shape, drape better on the body and continue to look polished after hours of wear," she explains.

Investing in the right quality fabric and pair, eventually pays off. Watson suggests looking at the fabric composition when you buy pants. "A quality blend with some synthetic fiber, a little stretch, or a thicker weave like crepe will generally be more resistant to wrinkling. If you’re sitting at a desk all day, traveling or moving between meetings, you want a trouser that’s going to maintain its shape and still look polished at the end of the day," she says.

Use the pants as a canvas and change what's happening around you with layers and accessories.

"For day, I love a beautiful trouser with a simple shell and jacket. It’s polished and refined without requiring a lot of thought. For evening, lose the jacket and swap the shell for a more interesting standalone or statement blouse, then change your accessories and shoes," she recommends.
