If you’re concerned about rising prices, you’re not the only one. The current 145% tariff on products being imported from China, as well as other potential proposed reciprocal tariffs, has people worried about the probable increased cost of items across the board, from groceries to tech.
And with the large-scale popularity of Apple products, many shoppers may be wondering if they should be making all of their tech purchases from the brand now, to avoid paying more for the already-expensive products.
Below, we're sharing everything we know so far about how the tariffs may impact Apple's products — plus, all of the deals that you can shop right now on AirPods, iPads and more.
Is tech exempt from tariffs?
President Donald Trump previously announced that a number of tech devices, including smartphones, computers and semiconductors, would be exempt from the additional 125% tariff that was placed on imports from China, as well as the 10% baseline tariff on other countries. (They will however be subjected to the 20% tariff on China that was already in place.) Although, as CNBC reported, it has been suggested by the president and other top officials that these exemptions may be temporary and the items may be subject to a separate set of tariffs in the coming months.
Is Apple affected by tariffs?
So what about Apple specifically? Well, like for many other brands and product categories, much of the impact on pricing is pretty uncertain at this point and depends on if additional tariffs are announced in the coming months.
On a recent quarterly earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook estimated that the tariffs, as they currently stand — even with the exemptions — will add $900 million to Apple's costs this quarter.
The company plans to shift production from China, with Cook stating that for the upcoming quarter, the majority of iPhones sold in the U.S. will originate from India. Additionally, "almost all" iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and AirPods products that are sold in the U.S. will come from Vietnam. (China will continue to be the country of origin for many of Apple's products sold outside of the U.S.)
While we're not sure what that might mean for its most popular items, like iPhones, AirPods, MacBooks and more, one shopping expert recently told us that if you have any "bigger ticket" items on your list to upgrade or replace, it might be a good idea to do so now.
