Death toll rises in NYC building collapse

Three more victims were pulled from the rubble of a massive gas explosion overnight, pushing the number killed to at least six as the search for more victims goes on. NBC’s Katy Tur reports.

>> the death toll is rising from a tragic explosion here in new york city . this morning crews are still searching through the rubble for still others who are missing. katie is at the scene. good morning.

>> reporter: good morning, tamron. you can still see the smoke from this charred pit behind me. police believe it was a gas leak that caused this. it shook the earth for blocks and shattered window, leaving six dead, a number injured and many unaccounted for. two buildings turned to rubble in an instant.

>> it sounded like a bomb went off.

>> we thought the train had slowed.

>> reporter: an explosion sent people on this busy new york city street running for cover. on the first floors, a church and piano store. above them, 15 apartments. family members frantic to find missing family members.

>> we just want to know if he's all right and the dog, too. i just want him alive, i just want to find him. if you're listening, george, please, if you're outside or whatever, please.

>> this is a tragedy of the worst kind because there was no indication in time to save people.

>> reporter: six people confirmed dead , including 22-year-old rosearia and others. con-edison was called about a gas leak 15 minutes before the scenario. this man said he smelled gas tuesday and it was worth a month ago.

>> that's when it was worse, we couldn't enter the building.

>> reporter: the fire that is burning underneath that rubble is now finally out, allowing rescue and recovery operations to get in there. and investigators will finally be able to get in
