Affordable secret island getaways

Nilou Motamed of Travel + Leisure magazine discloses her pick of the best island escapes, including Southport Island, Maine, and Caye Caulker, Belize.

>> let's talk about the great places. first, south island in maine . tell me about this eastern island.

>> booth bay harbor gets all of the press. it gets lots of visitors. it's got the new england charm. just a little bit away from that is southport island. you reach it by swing bridge . it's charming. feels like you have stepped back in time. there is one of the best lobster shacks in maine right there. so you can go there. there is also a great inn. it's $140 a night and they have not a lot of rooms. so you won't be around crowds. you can enjoy your down east vacation right there. of course they have adirondack chairs to take in the beautiful view .

>> let's head across the country to washington state . tell me about this great island.

>> there are lots of amazing islands off washington state . all of the san juans . this is one of the san juans , one of the smallest ones. this is a great place to go if you're a foodie. it's become a foodie haven. you can feast on incredible seafood and the chef at the great willows in has just come from noma, one of the best restaurants in the world in copenhagen. he will be doing inventive cooking for you, but only $185 a night. again, you will be surrounded by this incredible natural beauty.

>> vancouver island gets all of the buzz.

>> you want to make sure to spread the wealth. so salt spring island is smaller. it's a place that a lot of artists and farmers and people who are into eco conservation go. it's beautiful.

>> relaxing. i'm in the moment with that woman on the rock.

>> if you want to stay and have an agritourismo experience go to fox glove farm. they have a retreat with old cottages. one sleeps six. you can stay -- this is a great place to go.

>> you can farm?

>> you can pick your own strawberries and raspberries in the summer time . they cook what they grow.

>> that's perfect. nothing fresher than that. next from british columbia to the british virgin islands . we'll head south to scrub island . i have never heard of it.

>> this is a tiny spit of land that's not been inhabited until recently. it's 28 miles away from st. thomas. this is in the british virgin islands .

>> do you fly?

>> you take a ferry from st. thomas. there is a great new resort there that is the scrub island resort and spa. they have three beaches including one that's called honeymoon beach. if you are looking for a honeymoon destination, this is the place to go. uh you will get there by kayak. they give you a picnic lunch and the rest of the day you can do what you will.

>> whatever honeymooners do.

>> $299 a night there.

>> and next belize.

>> it's a gorgeous destination. if you want to go snorkeling or diving this is 15 minutes from the airport. not far to get to.

>> look at the color of the water.

>> it can be a worldle away. the motto there is go slow which i love. if you were going on vacation, slow down. a great place to stay there is seaside cabanas with ten rooms, great caribbean views. i love this resort. again, not an expensive one either.

>> $105 a night? that 's wonderful .
