When my Today.com editor asked me to review Lee's Utility Skimmer Capri Pant, I happily agreed — I’ve always considered capris the epitome of Italian chic. But when I pulled the pants out of the bag they arrived in, I quickly realized these weren’t your typical capris, with a length that lands somewhere between the knee and ankle (the name of these pants is a bit of a misnomer). Instead, these were more like skimmers, considered a longer version of shorts and a shorter version of capris. I had never worn skimmers before, but after trying them on, I thought, “These may be the pants I live in all summer long.”
Why I like the Lee Skimmer Capri Pants
They're super comfortable
The fabric is made of 98% moisture-wicking cotton and 2% flexible elastane, a great combo for warmer temperatures. But the pant’s secret sauce lies in the elastic waistband. (Hear me out if you swore you’d never wear stretch waist pants.) The elastic has been strategically placed on the sides and the back of the pants, making it pretty much invisible. And while you may not see it on the outside, you will feel it on the inside — there’s no squeezing, pinching, or gapping at the waistline, whether you’re sitting or in motion. These pants move with your body — it’s no surprise Lee calls this technology “flex-to-go”.
They fit well
Skimmers usually fall within three style options — relaxed, slim and cropped — and these land in the first category. Yet unlike relaxed skimmers that can feel loose and baggy (or hit at the widest part of the calf, resulting in an unflattering boxy look), these fit snugly without sagging, sitting about 2” below my knee. Reviewers consistently praise the fact these pants measure true to size — I ordered my size 2, (the smallest size available) and the pants fit perfectly.
I tested for shrinkage using two different colors (tan and olive) in the same size. I ran the tan pair through a warm wash and a hot dryer cycle, then laid them directly on top of the olive pair. Their lengths and widths matched up, with no loss of fabric. Bonus: The tan pair felt softer and even more comfortable after coming out of the wash and didn’t require ironing, although a light press made them appear crisper.
They’re versatile
Skimmers can look flattering on most body types as long as they’re well styled. For someone on the shorter side like me, these mid-risers won’t visually lengthen my legs (like a pair of high waisted skimmers would), so I like to wear them with a heel. For anyone else, flats or sneakers work well. Like capris, skimmers can be dressed up or down. For a relaxed-yet-stylish look while running errands, pair them with a fitted t-shirt such as Buck Mason Heirloom Rib Scoop Tank and sandals; in an office setting, a flowy blouse such as the Tommy Bahama Coral Isle Off-the Shoulder Top or a tailored blazer looks fashionable yet professional. At night, a ribbed knit tank top such as dāl Model Ribbed Knit Tank or a shirt in a luxe fabric like silk or satin along with a heel will elevate any look.
They’re well designed
These skimmers come with belt loops and two roomy lay-flat front pockets that don’t bulge or flare. There are two back pockets as well, although I’m not a fan of the Lee tag on the back left pocket — it sends a too casual message if you’re going for a professional or dressier look. (But it’s nothing a few minutes with a seam ripper won’t take care of.)

What to consider
If I were speaking to the designer, I’d request a narrower leg opening as I prefer a tighter silhouette.
The bottom line.
I’d recommend these skimmers for their level of quality, fit, and comfort. Unlike frumpy skimmers with drawstring waists, cuffed hems, and button flapped back pockets, these are a stylish option when you’re looking for a little more coverage than with shorts. They come in 9 sizes (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18) and 10 shades (olive, white, black, ecru tropical floral, gray, iris, blue, papaya, poppy, tan). I chose the tan and olive options because they’re two colors I’ll be able to wear into fall.
