For the latest edition of “Buddy Up” on the 3rd Hour of TODAY, Al Roker and Dylan Dreyer headed down the Jersey Shore to Atlantic City, taking in the sights, soaking up the sun and even enjoying some friendly competition.
From historic landmarks and local bites to classic rides and games on the famous boardwalk, the coastal city has something for everyone. Follow along with Al and Dylan’s itinerary below!
Lucy the Elephant
The first stop on Al and Dylan’s adventure was impossible to miss: Lucy the Elephant! For more than two decades, Richard Helfant has been the executive director and CEO of the country’s oldest roadside attraction. Originally built in 1881 as a gimmick to sell real estate, Lucy now greets 150,000 visitors each year when they arrive in neighboring Margate, NJ. When you step inside the belly of the beast, you can see some pretty incredible views of the beach and beyond.

The Boardwalk
Next up, Al and Dylan pedaled to Atlantic City’s famous boardwalk with local media personality Mike Lopez, but around Atlantic City he’s just “AC Mike.” Once a corrections officer, AC Mike now shares with visitors his love for Atlantic City and its rich history, from the boardwalk’s origins in 1870 to the history behind one of the oldest entertainment venues, Steel Pier. A highlight of the tour? Seeing some of the streets that inspired one of the most popular board games of all time: Monopoly!

Dock’s Oyster House
Dock’s Oyster House has been serving Atlantic City since 1897. The fourth generation family-owned restaurant remains a local favorite, thanks in large part to chef Stephan Johnson. With soft shell crabs, pan-seared scallops and, of course, tons of fresh oysters on the menu, the seafood joint was buzzing with happy and well-fed customers.

Steel Pier
Al and Dylan made one final stop at Steel Pier, the 1,000 foot long amusement park over the ocean, to take a shot at some classic boardwalk games. If you have a competitive side, there’s everything from basketball booths to water gun races — with big stuffed animal prizes for winners to take home. And for the perfect ending to the perfect day? A ride on the ferris wheel, with sky-high views of the one and only Atlantic City.
