From Lin-Manuel Miranda bringing multiple shows to Broadway to Bad Bunny headlining the Super Bowl, Puerto Rican influence has been having a large impact on American culture. At the same time, mainland culture has been influencing Puerto Rican tradition, too. Baby names are no exception.
Although only about 3 million people call Puerto Rico home compared to over 300 million in the rest of the United States, there tends to be a lot of overlap between the mainland and its island territory.
In the Social Security Administration’s list of top baby names in Puerto Rico, the territory shares four of the top ten baby girl names with the mainland (Mia, Emma, Isabella, Amelia) and four of the top ten baby boy names (Noah, Liam, Mateo, Lucas).
Several of the other popular Puerto Rican baby girl names rank high on the mainland’s list from 2025, including Aurora (#15), Valentina (#35), Catalina (#111) and Amira (#132).
Two of the names from Puerto Rico’s list — Milena and Ainara — are at the bottom of the top 1,000 names in America, which makes them great choices for parents who want the warm vowels of Isabella and Amelia but prefer a more unique name.
Puerto Rico’s top boy names are all a bit higher in popularity than the girl names. Four of them are in America’s top 100: Sebastian (#16), Ethan (#24), Dylan (#41) and Thiago (#50).
Elian (#147) and Eliam (#313) are slightly less popular than the other names on the list, but they contain the same sort of vibe as Ethan and Dylan, so it’s no surprise they’re well-liked by Puerto Rican parents.
