How to pick the best walking shoe
When you’re walking, the critical muscles and tendons around the ankle require the most support. The peroneal tendons (on the outside of the ankle) help stabilize the ankle and prevent the foot from "rolling in" on uneven surfaces, says Illinois Bone & Joint Institute surgeon Dr. Anand Vora.
“Women especially want to be sure to accommodate the forefoot (the toe area) and to stabilize the hindfoot and ankle with secure lacing,” Vora notes.
So, how do you choose a walking shoe with enough support in all the right places? In general, the choice boils down to fit and comfort. “You do not want to choose a shoe that is too constricting or doesn’t allow your foot to breathe,” says Dr. Kevin Kinney, an Atlanta-based chiropractor. Mesh and canvas shoes seem to be the most popular choices for comfort, breathability and weight.
Here are some other factors to consider when shopping:
Arch Support
In order to provide arches with necessary reinforcement, proper arch support is essential for those with flat feet in order to help reduce pain and suffering, foot and ankle surgeon Dr. Miguel Cunha says.
However, looking for shoes that fit your unique foot form and requirements with integrated arch support is the key to avoiding arch pain. Our experts say shoes with arch support tend to lessen the pressure on the ligaments and tendons in the foot and aids in the equal distribution of weight.
Sneaker width
Your foot should naturally splay out even when you're wearing shoes. If you have flat feet, having a shoe with more space in the toe box and midfoot area is best.
"This can lessen pain, blisters and the emergence of other foot problems. Most of the problems that occur with our feet — particularly for women, and often for runners — are because our shoes don’t have a wide enough forefoot," Cunha says.
"Definitely try on the shoe, as it should feel comfortable right away," double board-certified podiatrist Dr. Chanel Perkins suggests. "The shoe should also feel roomy enough to allow wiggle room for your toes, but never too loose."
To see if your shoe is wide enough, Cunha suggests tracing your foot onto a piece of paper at the end of the day when your feet are most swollen and place the shoe over the tracing of the foot. If the tracing of the foot is external to the edges of the shoe, then you know that your shoes are too narrow.
Cushioning
Our experts say cushioning is necessary as it reduces the impact when you walk. Having extra cushioning in the heel and midsole sections can help provide support to the lower legs and feet.
"The shoe should feel comfortable from the moment you put it on, with no areas of pressure or discomfort," podiatrist Dr. Janine Ferrigno-Taddeo says.
Maryland-based podiatrist Dr. Priya Parthasarathy says the ideal shoe also has a removable, supportive insole.
Durability
Your sole strength can make or break a walking shoe (literally). In order to tell if the shoe is rigid enough, Cunha suggests trying to bend the shoe in half.
"You shouldn’t be able to. The shank is the actual structure of the shoe and should be rigid to hold up and support the arch," he says.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know what size walking shoes to buy?
Ferrigno-Taddeo says shoppers should typically stick to their usual shoe size when shopping for walking shoes.
"There's no hard and fast rule about sizing up or down," Ferrigno-Taddeo. "The most important thing is to find a shoe that fits comfortably and securely. The best way to ensure you have your correct foot measurements is by getting a comprehensive foot scan that will measure width, girth, length and even pressure."
Chanel says look for a shoe that truly fits just right on your foot.
"I call it the Goldilocks effect. Have a sales person measure your foot using a Brannock device to get the correct shoe size," she says.
Our experts also recommend sticking to brands that have worked for you in the past so you are familiar with the sizing. When fitting yourself for walking shoes, Parthasarathy says there should be one thumb's width between your big toe and the end of the shoe.
Cunha recommends shoppers buy their shoes early in the day when their feet are less swollen which makes the shoes feel more comfortable when you initially wear them.
"Your feet swell later in the day due to the cumulative effects of gravity causing fluid retention to build up in your feet and ankles," he says. "If they feel comfortable at the end of the day most likely they will feel comfortable throughout the day."
What's the difference between walking and running shoes?
While walking and running shoes might appear to be virtually the same, they’re different. The sole of the shoe is the major factor separating walking shoes from running shoes.
While runners tend to strike the ground with their toes, walkers typically strike on the heel and might require additional arch support. For this reason, Kinney says walkers should look for shoes with more cushion in the back and a drop to the toe box of the shoe.
“The actual walking shoe itself is slightly lighter and more flexible than the running shoe, which tends to have more weight and rigidity,” Kinney says.
On the other hand, Parthasarathy says running shoes are designed to absorb impact forces from running, with additional cushioning in the heel and a more rigid sole to provide stability during the running stride.
Parthasarathy says because your walking pattern, or gait, differs between running and walking, it would be best to have two separate pairs of shoes for each activity.
"Both running and walking require cushioning and shock absorption in the shoes, so especially for those doing a run/walk program they can be used interchangeably for short distances," she says.
Cunha says running shoes are also generally constructed with materials that can withstand the repetitive impact of running. Our experts advise to be mindful that running shoes are typically heavier due to the materials used to handle the stress associated with the impact of running.
Which walking shoes are best for foot conditions like plantar fasciitis or flat feet?
When it comes to foot conditions like plantar fasciitis or flat feet, it's essential to choose walking shoes that provide adequate support and cushioning to alleviate symptoms and prevent further discomfort.
"Individuals with plantar fasciitis may benefit from shoes with extra arch support and cushioning in the heel, while those with flat feet may require shoes with additional arch support to help distribute weight evenly across the foot," Ferrigno-Taddeo says.
It's also important to know your foot type when buying shoes. Parthasarathy says a podiatrist or medical professional can help you narrow down the choices to see if your foot shape is pronated, neutral or supinated.
"This is crucial to identify so you purchase the right shoe for your foot type," says Parthasarathy. "Not everyone needs an orthotics, but certain foot conditions benefit from the additional support and orthotic provides. I tell my patients orthotics cannot make a bad shoe a good one. The orthotic needs a good foundation."
How do I clean my walking shoes?
Our experts say airing out and rotating your shoes can make a big difference in their longevity.
"Rotating shoes allows each pair to air out and fully dry between uses, which reduces the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria and fungus," Cunha says. "Also, store your shoes in a cool and dry place to avoid the growth of mold and mildew."
Ferrigno-Taddeo says shoppers should avoid putting walking shoes in the washing machine or dryer. Machines can damage the materials and affect the shoe's performance.
Instead, she suggests using a mild detergent and warm water to gently scrub away dirt and grime.
