Kathryn Hahn Talks Beauty Favorites, ‘Tangled,’ and the ‘Genius’ Item She Travels With

We spoke with the star about her current must-haves, from snacks to skin care essentials.

When Kathryn Hahn appears on your screen, you know you’re in for a treat. Her vast resume, which spans film and television, reads like someone’s Letterboxd favorites list, with projects like “How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days,” “Bad Moms,” “Glass Onion,” “Step Brothers” and plenty more.

And no matter what she’s in, you can bet she’ll be bringing the signature wit, charm and humor she’s become known for. And that includes her latest campaign with Amazon.

Hahn last teamed up with the e-retailer for its humorous back-to-school campaign, and now, she’s starring in its equally tongue-in-cheek new ad for Amazon Grocery. In it, she quips that you can “finally spend less on all the people you love,” thanks to the affordable grocery service. (You can see the video here.)

When we hopped on a video call with Hahn, she called the partnership a “no-brainer.” She shares, “I love the idea of a place where you can get really affordable food, products, anything, and that offers same-day delivery.” As a working mom who has been booked and busy as of late, her favorite features include the fast delivery options and how easy Amazon makes it to reorder your past favorites.

“It will save your history so you can just reorder and not have to go through the whole thing again ... even monthly stuff, like your toilet paper, your paper towels, your toothpaste, it can just appear same-day.”

As for how she approaches grocery shopping for her family of four, Hahn says, “It’s a crapshoot.” She adds, “We have our basics that I know we have to have in the house. So it’s like, for us, so much iced coffee, so many berries, almond milk, some yogurt, some coconut yogurt. We’ve got certain things, staples, that we just always have to have. And then sometimes it gets a little bit chaotic, and I go offline and get a bunch of different stuff.”

When it comes to what’s next for the star, there is one thing in particular that fans are looking forward to seeing her in: Disney’s upcoming live-action “Tangled” movie. We spoke with Hahn a couple of days after her appearance at Disney’s D23 fan event, where fans got a first look at the much-anticipated movie, where she will be playing Mother Gothel.

“We haven’t really gotten into it with Goth, so we’re still in the rehearsal phase for her,” she shares about the filming process. “So I would say the thing that I’m mostly enjoying is just being in Spain. I’d never been there before, and we’re shooting in the most stunning locations. So that’s been pretty amazing. Also, I feel like I’m in ‘Fame’ right now. I’m doing singing rehearsals and dancing rehearsals, and I never thought I’d be doing that at this stage of the game.”

She adds about the film, “It’s going to be beautiful; I’m really proud of it already.”

For our Shopping Diaries, we asked Hahn about some of her current favorite products, from the grocery staples she’s always re-ordering on Amazon to her morning essentials.

Shopping Diaries: Kathryn Hahn

The beverages she always keeps stocked:

When Hahn first started buying Chameleon’s cold brew, she didn’t realize that it was a concentrate, meant to be mixed with water. “It took me so long to realize it was a concentrate; I would just pour it into a mug, I had no idea,” she says. “I was so wired. I would go to a coffee place and be like, ‘This is so thin?’ I was just drinking concentrate in a glass [at home].”

Even though she now knows, she’ll still sometimes drink it without diluting. “Now I’m kind of used to it, so I kind of [still drink it]. Not as much, but I do love it. It feels like New Orleans-style coffee.”

“After I have my morning coffee, I just love an iced tea,” Hahn says, adding that she’s been a lifelong tea drinker. “My mom, growing up in Ohio, we used to make what she would call sun tea — which is just like a pitcher with like a bunch of tea bags in it, and you leave it outside in the sun.”

Now, however, she stocks up on the ready-made versions, saying that Tejava is her “go-to.”

The snack she always has at home:

Tate's Bake Shop Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Cookies

Hahn says she loves “a gluten-free cookie,” and right now she’s “really into” Tate’s. The New York-based brand offers a few different gluten-free flavors, including these classic chocolate chip cookies, which are made with rice flour.

Her most used kitchen gadget:

“For me, traveling a bunch, I love a personal blender,” Hahn says. “I love the [Magic] Bullet. I love making my own smoothie in the morning or a soup. I just think it’s such a genius invention, a personal blender.”

The item she always re-orders on Amazon:

“I like an eye patch,” Hahn says. “I like to have them in the freezer for particularly rough days; that’s always kind of fantastic.”

Augustinus Bader is one of her go-to brands, though she says her daughter has introduced her to others. “There are so many on Amazon that you can pick through,” Hahn says. “I don’t know the brand, [but] my daughter gets a pack that’s rainbow-colored, there are a bazillion different colors. We like doing a little eye mask night.”

She adds that the 17-year-old teaches her “everything” about beauty and which products to use. “She has so many products that I have no idea what they do,” Hahn says. “I clearly don’t wear makeup that often or brush my hair, and she has everything; she knows all of it. Cuticle oil, primers, setting sprays, dry shampoos, she has so many, so many items. The zit patches, which I wish I had had when I was in high school, are still a big-ticket item in our house.”

The beauty item she always keeps in her bag:

By Terry Baume de Rose Lip Care

Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm

Hahn says that she “always, always” has lip balm in her bag. “I’m really into the By Terry lip balm,” she shares. “It’s not cheap, but it’s so good. It’s a rose lip balm and it’s [in] a little tub, and it’s my favorite.”

Though she also loves another classic: “I like a tinted Burt’s Bees,” she adds.

Her hair care favorites:

Roz Milk Hair Serum

Out of all the products in her hair routine, Hahn says this serum has made the biggest difference. “It’s a moisture milk that you can put on your ends. And it really softens everything; it softens your ends.”

Color Wow Root Cover Up

She also counts “any kind of root touch-up” product among her beauty favorites, particularly this one from Color Wow. “This is a genius invention,” she says. “I used to take a mascara wand to do it and it took forever ... It was like jet black, tacky mascara.”

Her morning essentials:

Tom’s of Maine Natural Deodorant

When asked about what products Hahn considers to be essential for her morning routine, she listed these two things. She says the Visine and Tom’s each “speaks for itself.” (“I have dry eyes,” she adds.)

Vitner's Daughter Active Treatment Essence

This formula is another one of her must-haves for the a.m. “The Vintner’s Daughter serum is the product that I’ve found that seems to do the most moisture-wise — and I don’t break out,” she says. “It’s definitely not cheap, but it lasts for a very long time, and it’s so good.”

How she winds down at the end of the day:

Dr. Teal's Pure Epsom Salt Soaking Solution

Hahn says “anything lavender” is the key to helping her relax at the end of a long day. “I’m really into scents right now, so anything I could sprinkle on my pillow, any kind of lavender essence,” she says. “And also a bath, anything with Epsom salts and lavender in those.”

While she shares that you can make your own with Epsom salts and essential oils, this editor-loved soak features the calming scent.
