In 1998, fascination with the Titanic was at an all-time high, thanks to a blockbuster movie.
On April 15, 1998 — the 86th anniversary of the boat sinking — TODAY spoke with the woman who would eventually be the last survivor of the Titanic, Millvina Dean:
Dean was only 10 weeks old when the Titanic sank. Her memories of the disaster were only the details her mother told her years later. Her father was separated from the rest of the family when the ship hit the iceberg. He told his wife, "I hope to see you a bit later." His body was never found.
Despite the fact that the movie "Titanic" captivated the world, Dean insisted the film held no interest for her. She told TODAY that the Titanic disaster had changed just one thing in her life — had her family made it to America, she would have lived her life as an American, not an Englishwoman.
