Before R.E.M. sold 85 million copies and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, there was a time when they were hoping to get $100 for playing a gig. Singer Michael Stipe tells Sunday TODAY’s Willie Geist about their catapult into the spotlight with the 1991 hit “Losing My Religion,” and the music gift the band has for fans five years after they broke up.
