Carlee Russell’s family speaks out: ‘She was not in a good state’

03:59

The parents of the Carlee Russell, the 25-year-old who vanished for more than 48 hours after calling police to report a toddler walking alone down a highway, are speaking out exclusively to NBC News about how they reacted seeing her on their doorstep again. “We tried to hug her as best we could, but I had to stand back because she was not in a good state. So we've had to stand back and let medical professionals work with her,” her mother says. NBC’s Priscilla Thompson reports for TODAY. // Update - July 19, 4:30 p.m.: During a press conference, the Hoover Police Department in Alabama stated that after reviewing the ongoing case of Carlee Russell's disappearance, they have been “unable to verify” Russell’s statements to police and have no reason to believe that there is a threat to the public safety related to this particular case. Their investigation is ongoing.
