Warning: Spoilers ahead for “Paradise” Season 2, Episode 4
Season 2 of “Paradise” kicked off with a slew of new twists and questions to be answered.
The fourth episode, “A Holy Charge,” sees what happens after Sterling K. Brown’s Agent Xavier Collins is injured by a survivor and found by Shailene Woodley’s character Annie.
Annie is a former Graceland tour guide in Memphis, Tennessee, who survives the catastrophic events from Season 1 when the world seemingly ends.
Years later, a group of survivors run into her at the Elvis Presley estate. Its leader, Link (Thomas Doherty), and Annie develop a romantic relationship and after one night together she becomes pregnant. Link, however, doesn’t know of her pregnancy since he left the following day in search of the bunker in Colorado.
After she finds an injured Xavier, Annie, a former med student, helps heal him. He insists on traveling to Atlanta, Georgia, to search for his wife, Teri. Annie, however, tells him that he will take her to Colorado to find Link.
The two finally decide that they will travel in search of Teri, and then head to Colorado. As Xavier, on foot, and Annie, on horseback, head out on their journey, she starts to experience pregnancy complications.
They run into a group of people, who Annie warns are not their friends and to avoid contact.
Annie begins to feel worse and reveals to Xavier that she is suffering from preeclampsia, a pregnancy complication that can lead to serious if not fatal results for the mother and baby.
“I’m sorry, I thought if I told you you wouldn’t take me,” she tells Xavier, as they prepare for her to give birth.
An overwhelmed Xavier decides to go ask the group of people they passed for help despite Annie's pleas. She's worried that they will be dangerous and hurt them instead of helping them.
To Annie’s surprise, the whole group arrives just in time to deliver her baby girl.
Annie's health begins to decline and one of the women helping tells Xavier that the placenta won’t come out and the bleeding won’t stop.
“There’s nothing we can do,” Annie says, begging the women to stop helping her. “It's OK. No, I knew..."
She hands Xavier a note she had written for her baby.
“Xavier, give this to her when she’s old enough... Xavier, look at me,” she says as she’s dying. “It has to be you. Find her father. He was leading a group to the bunker to start the world. You will not let her be afraid of people. Promise me, Xavier. This is your holy charge. OK?”
Annie dies.
Xavier and the group bury her, and they offer to take the baby. He declines since he made Annie a promise.
Headed to Atlanta, he makes a stop and reads the letter Annie wrote to her daughter.
"Hello, darling. If you're reading this, I'm sorry that we never got the chance to meet. I don't know how old you'll be, or who you'll be with,” the letter reads. “All I know is that you were born into a hard world and I hope you can feel the love that I have for you, especially in your darkest moments and the longest nights.
“There are good people in this world,” the letter continues. “There always have been and there always will be. I trust that you’ve become one of them. I trust that love travels across death, across time. That it bridges impossible distances and binds people who’ve never known each other. I will always imagine you grown and brave and beautiful. I love you so much, my beautiful baby. Love, your mama.”
The episode ends with Link and his group arriving outside the bunker and sending a message to those inside. Xavier is also seen arriving in Atlanta, at the location where Teri sent out the radio broadcast from. He runs into a man who says he's a friend of Teri's and that she has been taken.
