“28 Weeks Later”Starring: Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner, Harold Perrineau, Catherine McCormack, Imogen Poots, Idris Elba, Mackintosh MuggletonDirector: Juan Carlos FresnadilloStory: Six months after the zombies have laid waste to Britain and the country is completely empty, U.S. troops come in to rebuild and repopulate the cities. Unbeknownst to everyone, one of the returning refugees carries the deadly Rage virus that turns people into flesh-eating zombies. This time the virus is even more dangerous than before.Buzz: Spanish director Fresnadillo (“Intacto”) takes the reigns from Danny Boyle, who has publicly proclaimed that he has no interest in making sequels. There’s a good cast here, but it’s hard to believe that this will be anything but a retread of the first film. Maybe the new director and screenwriters will bring from fresh blood, so to speak. Web site: NA “The Ex”Starring: Zach Braff, Amanda Peet, Jason Bateman, Charles Grodin, Mia Farrow, Donal Logue, Amy Poehler, Amy AdamsDirector: Jesse PeretzStory: Underachiever Tom Reilly (Braff) goes to work for his wife’s (Peet) father (Grodin) after she has her first child. Reilly clashes with the other employees, especially Chip (Bateman), his perky wheelchair-bound co-worker, who still carries a torch for Reilly’s wife. Buzz: From the wacky, pratfall-laden looks of this one, it’s a good thing Braff is considering another season of “Scrubs,” because his movie career seems to have stalled since “Garden State.” Bateman and Braff are friends (Bateman once did an episode of “Scrubs” and Braff did two episodes of “Arrested Development), so at least they probably had a fun time making the movie.Web site: “Delta Farce”Starring: Larry the Cable Guy, Bill Engvall, DJ Qualls, Marisol Nichols, Danny Trejo, Keith DavidDirector: C.B. HardingStory: Larry, his neighbor Bill (Engvall) and their buddy Everett (Qualls) go out target shooting one day and are mistaken for Army reservists by a gung-ho sergeant (David). They are sent to Iraq, but get lost somewhere along the way, ending up in Mexico instead, and must save a town from a Mexican outlaw named Carlos Santana (Trejo). Buzz: It’s almost as if the filmmakers weren’t quite ballsy enough to make a silly comedy set in Iraq (for legitimate fear of it being in bad taste), so they moved it to Mexico. If you’re fans of comedians Larry the Cable Guy and Engvall, there are sure to be some laughs here for you. If you weren’t a fan of “Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector,” you probably already know that it’s best to steer clear. Web site: NA “Georgia Rule”Starring: Jane Fonda, Lindsay Lohan, Felicity Huffman, Dermot Mulroney, Cary Elwes, Garrett HedlundDirector: Garry MarshallStory: Rachel (Lohan) is a rebellious out-of control teenager. After her latest car crash, her mom Lily (Huffman) decides to take the girl away from their San Francisco home to her mom Georgia’s (Fonda) Idaho farm. Georgia is a strict woman with a lot of rules, but as the summer goes on, Rachel lets down her guard and reveals secrets she’s never been able to share. Buzz: This movie is most notorious for being the film that prompted a studio boss to write Lohan a note calling her on-set behavior “discourteous, irresponsible and unprofessional.” The ultimate chick-flick director Marshall (“Beaches,” “Pretty Woman”) likes to mix humor and pathos, so expect some tears — but don’t expect to see a man in the theater (unless you’re the one who dragged him). Web site: “The Flock”Starring: Richard Gere, Claire Danes, Dwayne L. Barnes, Erik Davies, Russell Sams, Avril LavigneDirector: Andrew LauStory: Gere stars as a federal agent who, while training his replacement (Danes), must track down a girl (Lavigne) he thinks is connected to a paroled sex offender he’s investigating. Buzz: Director Lau is the man who helmed the three Hong Kong “Infernal Affairs” films — “The Departed” is based on the third one — so expect some twists in this story. This is Lau’s first English-language film.Web site: NA
