S.E. Hinton, best-selling author of young-adult books such as “The Outsiders” and “Rumblefish,” will publish her first novel in 16 years next month.

Hinton’s publisher, Tor Books, said “Hawkes Harbor,” the story of an orphan who faces adventures on the sea, will be published Sept. 15. It’s Hinton’s first novel since 1988’s “Taming the Star Runner.”

“Hawkes Harbor” is Hinton’s first fiction aimed at adult readers, Tor Books said last week.

“I was having a hard time figuring out what to write,” Hinton, who lives in Tulsa, said in a statement. “I finally remembered one of the perks to writing is having adventures. So I set out to write an adventure story.”

“Hawkes Harbor” tells the story of Jamie Summers, an orphan who goes out to sea and encounters pirates, sharks, smugglers and prisons before landing in the seaside town that provides the book’s title.
