Publicist Allan Mayer says the "Trapped in the Closet" singer had been complaining of severe throat pain for some time and went to see a throat specialist. After a preliminary examination, he was transported to the emergency room at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where doctors subsequently drained an abcess on one of Kelly's tonsils.

The rep said the R&B smoothie will remain "laid up" in the hospital "for an indefinite amount of time" while he recovers.

No word how the condition will affect his vocal cords or when he'll be able to resume performing. Kelly just wrapped up the U.S. leg of his worldwide Love Letter tour.
