Ready for a few more twists and tweaks, “American Idol” fans? Ready or not, here they come.

As if the much-hyped overhaul of most of the judging panel and various production shake-ups weren’t enough for a fresh, new "Idol," executive producer Nigel Lythgoe recently announced that the upcoming season’s finalists will have to face a series of challenges.

Speaking to TVGuide.com, Lythgoe revealed that would-be “Idols” can expect to compete in a variety of industry-related challenges, such as making their own music videos, working with bands and dancers and mastering the art of self-promotion.

One more big change on the way is the elimination of the top-24 stage of the competition. Instead, the televised talent show is expected to somehow zoom ahead to the top 12.

“I didn’t think (the top 24) were very good,” Lythgo said. “I was bored with them by the time they got there.”
