Marilynne Robinson's “Gilead” and Edwidge Dandicat's “The Dew Breaker,” two of last year's most acclaimed novels, were among the finalists announced Wednesday for the PEN/Faulkner prize for best fiction by an American author.

Robinson and Dandicat are also finalists for the National Book Critics Circle prize, which will be announced March 18. Another NBCC nominee, Philip Roth's “The Plot Against America,” was bypassed for the PEN/Faulkner.

The other PEN/Faulkner nominees were Ha Jin's “War Trash,” Jerome Charyn's “The Green Lantern” and Steve Yarbrough's “Prisoners of War.” The winner, who will be announced in April, receives $15,000. Finalists each get $5,000.
