Ruffles and frills have been around since the 16th century — so, they're not exactly new. But as with all of the best trends, they've made a major comeback.
Ever since Jerry Seinfeld's infamous "puffy shirt," these two trends have gotten somewhat of a bad rep. Luckily, Good Housekeeping's style director, Lori Bergamotto, visited TODAY Thursday to show how to look elegant, polished and surprisingly modern all while pulling off these classic trends.

Pixie Market Gingham Ruffled Bustier Top, $114, shopspring.com
The ruffle on this bustier top is feminine yet sculptural, making it feel modern in 2017. Wear it with a black tulle skirt and a pair of pink heels for an unexpected twist.
Wrap Skirt with Ruffle, $60, Lane Bryant
The great thing about ruffles is that the trend looks great on every body type. Women sometimes avoid them out of fear of adding volume, but there's no need to worry about that issue with this skirt! The cascading ruffle on this wrap skirt is inherently flattering because it all comes together at the waist, creating an automatic hourglass figure.
Who What Wear Ruffle Bomber Jacket, $40, Target
You can work frills into your wardrobe, no matter what your everyday style is. If your style is a bit edgier, this bomber jacket achieves that modern vibe with just the right amount of flounce.
K/Lab Pink Ruffled Dress, $51, Kohls
If you're into super trendy pieces, you can't get much trendier than this off-the-shoulder dress in millenial pink!
Off-The-Shoulder Ruffle One-Piece Swimsuit, $118, J.Crew
If you want to add some volume to your bust line, strategically-placed ruffles can make that happen, on the beach or off.
Jen Gingham Ruffle Culotte Jumpsuit, $28, boohoo.com
One of this season's hottest wardrobe staples is the culotte jumpsuit. A little ruffly flair on this gingham print makes it flirty and flattering — the perfect summer must-have combo.
Ruffle T-back Tank, $60, Lane Bryant
If you're just looking for a way to participate in the trend without going overboard, you can try a subtler ruffle trim on a sleeve or T-back tank.
Accessories
Frills aren't just for clothes! You can infuse some life into an otherwise basic wardrobe with some frilly accessories. The nice thing about a ruffled accessory is that it can add depth and texture to nearly any look, functioning like a pop of color or hint of a loud pattern. They're an easy way to look put-together with virtually no effort!
You can even try a cute little ruffled dress for kids.
