The MTV Video Music Awards always have been a spectacle, but they seem to reach a new level of frenzy whenever celebrity couples appear together at the annual event.

Before this Sunday's VMAs broadcast, TODAY.com revisits some of the most memorable duos, who, even if their romance was short-lived, appeared to be over the moon when that year's Moonmen were awarded.

1. Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears (2000)

Timberlake and Spears were pop royalty in the "TRL" era, but their relationship wouldn't last. MTV drove that point home during the 2003 VMAs, when cameras caught J.T.'s reaction to Spears' kiss with Madonna during the ladies' performance with Christina Aguilera.

2. Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley (1994)

The "King of Pop" and the daughter of "The King" also may have been considered music royalty, but that didn't make their onstage kiss any less awkward. They divorced two years after this public display of affection.

3. Beyoncé and Jay Z (2004)

The two music moguls have been partners and style icons, at the VMAs and otherwise, for more than a decade. Ten years after posing for this photo at the 2004 event, Jay Z presented Bey with the VMAs' Video Vanguard Award.

4. Katy Perry and Russell Brand (2011)

After famously feeling a spark at the 2009 VMAs, the songstress and the actor married in 2010 and attended the following year's ceremony as a couple. But just months after that 2011 appearance, Brand filed for divorce.

5. Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson (2005)

Married in 2002, the singers and "Newleyweds" stars made their final VMAs appearance as a couple in 2005. They parted ways months later, but both have since remarried: In 2011, Lachey said "I Do (Cherish You)" to Vanessa Minnillo (now Vanessa Lachey); and Simpson probably said/possibly sang "I Wanna Love You Forever" when she got hitched to football player Eric Johnson in 2014.

6. Taylor Swift and Joe Jonas (2008)

It was a short but memorable relationship, as they only dated for a few months that year before, Swift said, Jonas dumped her via a 27-second phone call. Swift had long since appeared to "Shake It Off" by the 2014 VMAs, when she unleashed some serious dance moves while seated next to her buddy Lorde.

7. Jennifer Lopez and Sean Combs (2000)

Dating from 1999 to 2001, J. Lo and Puff Daddy may have given Spears and Timberlake a run for music's top power couple at the crossroads of the millennium.

Reportedly a couple from 2005 to 2010, the "High School Musical" sweethearts appeared together at the 2008 ceremony.

9. Marilyn Manson and Rose McGowan (1998)

The "Charmed" actress's revealing VMAs dress might be even more famous than her then-relationship with the shock-rocker.

10. Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez (2011)

Gomez may have been focused on co-hosting the VMAs pre-show that year, but that wasn't going to stop the Biebs from dropping by to say hello.

11. Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson (1999)

Anderson had a thing for the Mötley Crüe drummer in the '90s, but by the time the 2001 VMAs rolled around, the "Baywatch" star's rocker of choice was Kid Rock.

Although the two singers have parted ways, they were red-carpet darlings at last year's ceremony.
