In the Duggar family, the job of taking care of the youngest members is no small task. After all, as the title of their TLC reality show states, there are "19 Kids and Counting," and someone has to keep a close eye on the little ones. Usually that job goes to mom Michelle and her older daughters, but not always.

In an exclusive clip from the season premiere of "19 Kids and Counting" that TLC provided to TODAY.com, Michelle and the big girls are out of town, so it's Jim Bob's turn to take care of his kids.

"Dad has fun with them," Michelle explained. "You know, mommas take care of them and daddies have fun with them, and so they're usually doing fun stuff when dad's there."

And while there wasn't any shortage of good times while dad took over, there were more responsibilities for Jim Bob. After an exhausting time playing, diaper wrangling and gum-policing, the father of the big brood admitted he missed the rest of the family.

"It sure was fun spending time with my little girls alone, but it really makes me grateful for when my older ones are there, 'cause they're a lot of help," he said.

Catch more from the ninth season premiere when "19 Kids and Counting" airs Tuesday night at 9 p.m. ET on TLC. To see more from the Duggars themselves, tune in to TODAY Tuesday morning on NBC.
