As she toured the white marble master bathroom in this Mandeville Canyon home in 1977, Gail Andrews spotted something you don't see every day shopping for a house: an Oscar statuette.

Actress Eva Marie Saint, the home’s owner at the time, received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in "On the Waterfont" in 1954. According to Andrews, who bought the home, Saint is as charming and comfortable as her home, a private retreat built in the golden age of Hollywood, when Saint played some of the most famous lead female roles in history. She was the sultry spy in Alfred Hitchcock's "North by Northwest," and spoke this famous line in "On the Waterfront" to Marlon Brando: "I didn't say I didn't love you. I said, 'Stay away from me.'"

Saint raised her two children in this private, rambling, lemon-yellow farmhouse on two wooded acres. A small platform in the yard served as a stage for a band at her daughter's wedding, said James R. Andrews, Gail's husband.

Celebrity abounds, as the back of the property abuts another property owned by Heidi Klum and Seal, and Sarah Michelle Gellar just bought a place across the street.

"Places like this often appeal to celebrities because they're off the beaten path, and yet they're convenient to everything," said listing agent Mary Lu Tuthill of Coldwell Banker Previews International. "As you drive up the canyon road, you kind of unwind."

The four-bedroom, six-bath home lacks the grand formality found in some newer celebrity homes. It doesn't show off. Instead, it carries an informal elegance: a large living room with a fireplace, windows overlooking the gardens, a white marble bathroom with shiny brass fixtures and a sumptuous bathtub — all of this, Oscar not included.

According to Zillow’s mortgage calculator, a monthly payment would be $21,144, assuming a 20 percent down payment on a 30-year-mortgage.
