Pharrell Williams cries 'Happy' tears during interview with Oprah

April 15, 2014 at 11:26 AM ET

Pharrell Williams' hit "Happy" has thrilled millions since it was released in 2013. But when the singer/producer discovered during an interview on "Oprah Prime" how the song had inspired fans, it brought him to tears.

During a chat with Oprah Winfrey, Williams (who wore another of his now-signature Vivenne Westwood-designed hats, this one green) talked about some of his inspirations, favorite things and the surprise success he's enjoyed recently. But when she showed him a montage of fan videos from around the world featuring people singing and dancing along to "Happy," he broke down.

"Why am I crying on 'Oprah'?" he chuckled while wiping his eyes. Naturally, Winfrey had a handy tissue to give him.

"I just appreciate the fact that, like, people have believed in me for so long that I could make it to this point to feel ... to feel that," he told her.

On TODAY Tuesday, Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford aired a portion of the interview, and both women were impressed by how humble he seemed.

"Gratitude," said Gifford. "Something you don't see enough of."

Williams also shared more of that rarely seen commodity on Twitter.

And Winfrey also expressed her own thanks, and appreciation, in multiple tweets.

"Oprah Prime" airs on OWN Sundays at 9 p.m.
