Watch a World War II veteran reunite with his pen pal from 70 years ago

03:03

Mel Downing, a 92-year-old World War II veteran, opened his mailbox in Florida one day to discover a letter from Shirley Burns, a now 90-year-old Massachusetts woman whom he corresponded with via letters more than 70 years ago. With the help of the internet, Shirley found Mel after rediscovering their letters in her attic. It didn’t take long before Mel boarded a plane to reunite with his one-time pen pal. NBC’s Kerry Sanders reports for TODAY.
