Dramatic eyes and nails, soft lips: that seems to be the beauty trend of 2011, at least according to make-up sales from the first half of the year, according to market research company NPD.

In eye makeup trends, playful color is out, natural drama is in. (Think Penelope Cruz over, say, Lady Gaga.) Women are buying mascaras with either volumizing or defining effects, to produce lush, swooping lashes which accentuate the eyes in a bold and sophisticated way. These lavish lashes are being paired with muted eye-shadows like brown or beige, for a natural look.

The top selling mascaras are:

1. Lancome Definicils High Definition Mascara ($25)

2. Clinique High Impact Mascara ($14.50)

3. Lancome Hypnose Drama Mascara ($25)

Nail color is another way in which women are making bold beauty statements this year. For under $20 a bottle, women can add a fun or sophisticated touch to their look, and the wide variety of colors available make nails one of the easiest ways to individualize a beauty trend. Short black nails are an edgy and popular option, though pale pinks are always in style.

“As consumers continue to gradually emerge from the great recession, the current sentiment among women seems to be ‘celebrate your girlhood.’  Pink, pink, and more pink, continues to lead the way in both lip and nail color," said Karen Grant, vice president of  NPD Group.

The highest sellers this year are:

1. Chanel Le Vernis Nail Enamel ($25)

2. Lippmann Collection Nail Enamel ($16)

3. Estee Lauder Pure Color Nail Lacquer ($19)

Pair your dramatic eyes and bold nails with a lipstick (not gloss!) in pale pink or nude for a fresh look that's all 2011.
