Fortune seekers George Wright and Scott Lomu know there are no rewards without risks, but even the gold-mining stars of "Jungle Gold" weren't prepared for the danger they and the show's crew faced in Ghana.
In a clip the Discovery Channel has shared exclusively with TODAY.com, the men decide to start mining a claim believed to hold $2.5 million in gold when, as the narrator explains, "all hell breaks loose."
Without warning, an armed militia attacked a nearby mine and it soon became clear that the "Jungle Gold" crew were in their sights, too.
"Being deadly serious about this," a producer warned the group about the need to run. "Get your kit together as quickly as you can."
A Ghana news program then revealed that militia leader in the town of Fahiakobo had promised to arrest the crew, who were scrambling to find a way out of the region, though the reason for the manhunt remained unclear.
"George and I are now Ghana's most wanted, and we haven't done a (expletive) thing wrong," an obviously shaken Lomu said. "We are trying to figure out how to get the (expletive) out of here. It's pretty hairy. I don't know what to do."
The only option was to find safe passage, a prospect that didn't look likely at the time.
"Armed gunmen are chasing you; the word 'fear' doesn't cover it," Wright said. "It's absolute terror."
