Broadway producers plotting a revival of "Grease" next June are hoping fans will be hopelessly devoted to two new stars that will be selected as part of a television talent contest.
NBC announced on Tuesday that it will air a midseason reality series, "You're the One That We Want," that will allow viewers to vote on casting the roles of Sandy Dumbrowski and Danny Zuko for the new "Grease."
The original "Grease" opened in June 1972 and ran for 3,388 performances before closing. John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John had the lead roles in the film version of the show in 1978.
It spawned a slew of hit songs: "You're the One That I Want," "Summer Nights," "Hopelessly Devoted to You" and "Grease Is the Word."
"This show is the real deal, a talent search with a phenomenal and tangible prize," said Wayne Garvie, content director for BBC Worldwide Productions, which will make the show, scheduled to open in June 2007.
