With “Frasier” fading from network television after this season, can Kelsey Grammer find happiness on Broadway?

The TV star reportedly is in negotiations to take over the role of charlatan impresario Max Bialystock in “The Producers” when Nathan Lane departs the Mel Brooks musical in April. News of the negotiations was reported Tuesday on the TV Guide Web site.

A spokesman for the musical couldn’t be reached for comment, but TV Guide Online said Grammer, when asked who would play Bialystock’s sidekick Leo Bloom, replied, “I don’t know. That’s one of the questions.”

Lane and his co-star, Matthew Broderick, leave “The Producers” April 4, having rejoined the hit musical Dec. 30.

Grammer, who has played the neurotic psychiatrist Dr. Frasier Crane on the NBC sitcom since 1993 and before that on “Cheers,” made a brief Broadway appearance three years ago in a critically panned production of “Macbeth” that quickly closed.
