Novelist Helen DeWitt, who wrote the critically acclaimed “The Last Samurai” and had been reported missing, was found in good condition Wednesday, police said.

Dewitt, 46, was found in Niagara Falls, N.Y., police said. She was last seen Tuesday morning on Staten Island, police said. Her landlord reported her missing.

“The Last Samurai,” published in 2000, is the story of a single mother, Sibylla, and a child prodigy, Ludo, who reads by age 2, learns several languages by 4 and is fascinated by Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 movie masterpiece “The Seven Samurai.”

DeWitt drew praise from many quarters for her compelling plot, a reflection of her grounding in philosophy, literature and the classics. “The Last Samurai,” published in 14 countries, was her first novel.
