When Susan Pierce Grossman became a grandmother for the first time, she knew she wanted to surprise her daughter, Nadene Orr, with a special gift: a magical photo of granddaughter Meredith dressed as Thumbelina.
It’s a gift that has kept on giving, as Grossman has now created several photos of baby Meredith, all centered around classical children’s stories and literature. The series recently went viral and Grossman, a retired art teacher, told TODAY Parents she’s not done combining her lifelong photography hobby with her adorable grandchild.
“I’m an older grandmother, at 67, and my goal has always been to be a good role model, and source of wisdom, strength, happiness, comfort and support for my two daughters. Now, that includes my one and only grandchild, Meredith,” said Grossman, who lives on Long Island, New York, and visits Orr and her daughter often in their Key West, Florida, home.
Grossman says that, while some of her friends are bragging about their grandchildren getting their driver’s licenses, she’s just getting started on her journey as a grandmother. And, what began as a baby book for Meredith has become a way for Grossman to leave memories behind that her granddaughter will treasure forever.
“I made my mom wait a long time for her granddaughter. She is enjoying every moment with her and making such special memories—memories we will have forever,” said Orr. “I’m so happy that Meredith will get to know how amazing her grandma is and how much she is loved. I know that these photos will be an inspiration to her as she grows up,” said Orr.
Grossman’s photos have transported baby Meredith to the moon, the land of Oz, and Sesame Street, to name a few. Grossman says she has several upcoming photos planned, but, as always, she’s keeping the themes a secret from her daughter.
“It is my greatest joy to make my children smile. And, because it is also very hard to surprise your older children, I’m keeping my ideas between me and Amazon, where I search for costume ideas,” said Grossman.
