Theodore Roosevelt National Park in western North Dakota is holding its annual stargazing event this week.

The North Dakota Badlands Star Party is Friday and Saturday in the park's North Unit. People will be able to view constellations through telescopes after sunset each day, and the sun through solar telescopes on Saturday afternoon.

Park Superintendent Valerie Naylor says dark skies are becoming a vanishing resource in the U.S. because of light pollution from cities and other development. She says national parks are trying to preserve the night sky.

The North Dakota Badlands Star Party is hosted by the Northern Sky Astronomical Society of Grand Forks.
