Queen Elizabeth wished her husband a happy 92nd birthday in the hospital on Monday, paying Prince Philip a visit where he is recovering from exploratory stomach surgery.
The prince was “progressing according to plans at this early stage,” resting comfortably and was “in good spirits” following his procedure last week, according to a statement Monday from Buckingham Palace. The prince was expected to remain in the hospital for up to two more weeks and will then spent two additional months resting, the palace added.
A pair of gun salutes were fired in Philip's honor earlier Monday, and British Prime Minister David Cameron also sent him birthday wishes via Twitter.
The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted last Thursday for a planned procedure he underwent the following day to determine the source of an abdominal problem.
Buckingham Palace officials released a statement following the surgery saying the Duke was “progressing satisfactorily,” but have not released additional details.
This is Philip’s fourth trip to the hospital in 18 months. He was treated for a recurring bladder infection last August, forcing him to miss the end of the queen’s diamond jubilee celebrations. In December of 2011, he had a stent inserted into his heart.
