CIA Director Leon Panetta plans to begin his new post as U.S. Secretary of Defense on July 1 if he is confirmed by the Senate by then, a senior Obama administration official said on Wednesday.
Panetta is President Barack Obama's choice to replace Robert Gates, who would step down from the position on June 30.
