The holidays are almost here, and for many of us, that means at least one busy, long weekend spent traveling and visiting family or friends.

You want to travel light but nevertheless look festive for such a special occasion. How to do that and still emerge looking fresh and fabulous?

We share our style secrets, from the wear-with-everything pant to the power of brights to the fool-proof embellished sweater, in this edition of our weekly fashion and beauty update.

Do yourself a favor and at least "test drive" a pricier piece of luggage. Most wheelies are now designed so they are even easier to walk with than in the past. If you’ve had it with lost luggage, Swiss Army and Tumi make pieces that can be traced anywhere in the world — and the company does the work for you!

If you're a little leery of drawing so much attention to your waist, consider redirecting the eye to your face with long linear earrings or a brooch — or two — placed high on a classic-styled velvet blazer.

For the most flattering and ageless look, go for a long, lean, easy fit. Make sure the pants have a flat front — no pleats! — and a bit of a wider leg. You might emerge with a whole new attitude on "packing light!"

If you’re well into your 30s (or beyond) and want a more sophisticated take on this trend, choose a sweater with just one embellishment — a velvet trim or beading would be most appropriate. It’s simply stylish.

When you find the bright color that you love, upgrade — if possible — to cashmere or a cashmere blend. The luxe knit will make you look even more glam!
