In the late 1800s, this mine in rural Arizona supported a whole town, with a post office, a school, a general store and a stagecoach line. The area was so rich some prospectors reported finding gold nuggets the size of potatoes.
But once miners dug so deep the mine flooded, Asarco abandoned it and almost all the buildings were torn down. Now all that exists on the 266-acre piece of property is a manufactured home atop 25 miles of tunnels.
The off-the-grid home, along with the mine, is for sale for $5.9 million. Scottsdale-area real estate agent Preston Westmoreland has been showing the property, at 14125 W. Ben Jaffe Blvd. in Wickenburg, Ariz., using a helicopter and hiking into tunnels on foot – after clearing rattlesnakes from the entry.
The right buyer could update the mine and strike gold. If that doesn’t work out, an FM radio tower on the property generates enough income to pay the bills, Westmoreland said.
The Octave was featured on the Syfy show “Ghost Mine.” Paranormal investigators entered the mine looking for evidence of the fabled “Blue Devil of Octave.”
