February 24th is the day to pay homage to the fried corn snack -- which has the power to not only to accompany Thirsty Thursday happy hour, but to help curb violence.

Homeboy Industries, the Los Angeles nonprofit formed to offer former gang members and convicts a second chance, launched its line of chips and salsa at California markets last month as part of an effort to increase its revenue stream.  Homeboy's motto, "Nothing stops a bullet like a job," reflects its mission to reform individuals' lives through work experience. As it turns out, former gang members and ex-cons make a mean tortilla chip. Proceeds from the chips go to funding Homeboy services, which include tattoo removal and counseling. So this Tortilla Chip Day, take a bite out of crime -- and a tortilla chip at the same time.

Need some salsa with those chips? Try making Brian Boitano's herb tomato salsa.
