Ever leave your wallet at home? Or, like, 62 bucks in a checking account in West Virginia?

Apparently Matt Lauer did. West Virginia state treasurer John Perdue, who's in charge of the state's unclaimed funds, recently gave Matt a "Hey, Mister!" and let him know that he left some cash behind. (TODAY found out about the unclaimed funds via the Wall Street Journal, which reported on the story.)

Seems Matt left the money in a checking account way back in 1979 (at which time, he pointed out, he had a lot more hair), when he was but a daytime news producer. With inflation, that's basically like leaving behind several bricks of gold.

Natalie shrewdly wondered if there was interest, and Savannah hoped that John Perdue had pictures of Matt in '80s style parachute pants... but alas, John said no. He also invited Matt to file an e-claim for the money, but hoped he would come and visit in person.

"We're glad you're from West Virgina," he said. (Actually, Matt was born in New York City, but let's not split hairs.)

So why did Matt leave the cash behind?

"I had to leave the state in a hurry," he joked Thursday morning.

But don't worry about the stash of cash -- Matt said he plans to sweeten the pot and donate it all to a West Virginia charity.
